The Familiar Frustration of Booking
For decades, booking a train ticket during peak festival seasons, holidays, or the daily Tatkal window has been a digital lottery. Millions of users descend upon the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website simultaneously, creating
traffic spikes that the system has historically struggled to handle. This leads to frozen screens, payment gateway failures, and the disheartening experience of seeing available tickets vanish in seconds. The core issue has been the capacity of the underlying Passenger Reservation System (PRS), the technology backbone for all reserved tickets since 1986. With nearly 89% of the 65 crore reserved tickets between June 2025 and June 2026 booked online, the existing infrastructure, last updated in 2010, was simply no match for modern digital demand.
A Quantum Leap in Capacity
The new, next-generation PRS represents a monumental upgrade. Indian Railways is boosting its ticket booking capacity from the current 32,000 tickets per minute to over 1.5 lakh tickets per minute. That's nearly a five-fold increase, designed specifically to handle the intense, concentrated demand of peak booking hours. Alongside this, the system’s capacity to handle passenger enquiries—for things like seat availability and PNR status—will see an even more dramatic tenfold jump, from 4 lakh enquiries per minute to over 40 lakh. This entire overhaul is being managed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the long-standing technology arm of Indian Railways.
The Technology Driving the Change
This isn't just a minor software update; it's a complete architectural shift. The old system ran on Itanium servers with an OpenVMS platform, technology from 2010. The new PRS is built on a modern, cloud-based platform. This cloud architecture provides greater scalability and flexibility, allowing the system to dynamically allocate resources to handle sudden surges in traffic without failing. The goal is to deliver higher reliability and reduce the system failures that have plagued passengers during critical booking windows. The phased migration to this new system began in August 2026, with railways carefully shifting traffic to the upgraded infrastructure to ensure a stable and smooth transition for a service that operates around the clock.
What This Means for Your Next Booking
For passengers, this upgrade promises a significantly less stressful booking experience, especially for last-minute Tatkal tickets. The IRCTC beta website, which went live in July 2026, already showed promising results, with a 5% increase in Tatkal bookings completed within the first three minutes. The new system also aims to be more user-friendly, with a multilingual interface to make booking and enquiries easier for a wider range of users across the country. While the new system will make the process of booking a ticket smoother and faster, it's important to remember what it doesn't change: the number of available seats on a train. The upgrade is about improving access, not creating more inventory.
