The Personal Loan Boom is Real
Recent data from the Reserve Bank of India confirms that the personal loan segment is experiencing robust growth. As of June 2026, personal loans grew by 15.8% year-on-year, a significant jump from the 11.7% recorded the previous year. This surge is part
of a broader trend of strong credit demand across India, with overall bank credit growing at an even faster pace. This boom is fuelled by several factors: rising aspirations, increased consumer spending, easier access through digital lending apps, and a growing economy. For many, a personal loan is the quickest way to finance everything from a wedding or vacation to a medical emergency or home renovation. Lenders, from traditional banks to new-age fintechs, are eager to meet this demand. But with high demand comes a change in the lender's strategy.
The Advertised Rate vs The Real Cost
When you see an ad for a personal loan, the headline figure is almost always the interest rate. It’s designed to be attractive and competitive. However, the total cost of borrowing is often significantly higher once other charges are factored in. The most common and significant of these is the processing fee. This is a one-time, non-refundable charge that lenders levy to cover the administrative costs of verifying your documents, assessing your creditworthiness, and disbursing the loan. This fee typically ranges from 0.5% to as high as 5% of the total loan amount and is often deducted upfront from the money you receive. For a loan of ₹5 lakh, a 2% processing fee means you immediately lose ₹10,000, plus 18% GST on that fee.
How High Growth Impacts Fees
The connection between soaring loan growth and processing fees is simple economics. When demand is high, lenders are in a stronger position. They have less incentive to compete by lowering or waiving fees. Instead, they can keep their advertised interest rates looking low to attract applications, while using processing fees and other charges to protect or enhance their profit margins. In a booming market with millions of potential borrowers, a seemingly small percentage fee, when applied across a massive volume of loans, becomes a major source of revenue. This is why, even as competition in the lending space increases, these fees remain stubbornly in place. The focus shifts from offering the cheapest overall loan to winning the customer's initial attention with an attractive interest rate.
The Hidden Charges to Watch For
Processing fees are just the tip of the iceberg. Borrowers need to be aware of a host of other potential charges that can inflate the cost of a loan. Prepayment or foreclosure penalties are a big one; some lenders charge you a fee, often 2-5% of the outstanding amount, for paying back your loan early. Thankfully, recent RBI guidelines have banned these fees on floating-rate personal loans taken by individuals after January 1, 2026, but they can still apply to fixed-rate loans. Other costs to look out for include late payment penalties, which can be 2-4% of the EMI amount, EMI bounce charges if there are insufficient funds in your account, and various smaller 'miscellaneous' charges for things like documentation or issuing statements.
How to Be a Smarter Borrower
In this environment, the onus is on the borrower to be vigilant. First, always look beyond the advertised interest rate and ask for the Annual Percentage Rate (APR). The RBI now mandates lenders to provide a Key Fact Statement that includes the APR, which represents the total cost of the loan including all fees, giving you a truer picture for comparison. Read the loan agreement carefully—all of it. Don't be rushed. Ask the lender to provide a complete schedule of charges in writing. Use online loan calculators to understand your total repayment amount, not just the EMI. Finally, remember that a good credit score can give you some negotiating power, potentially on the processing fee if not the interest rate. By being informed, you can navigate the loan market with confidence and ensure you get the best possible deal.
