Forget Japan in spring. India has its own spectacular cherry blossom season, and it happens every autumn in Meghalaya. This November, the hills of Shillong will transform into a dreamscape of soft pink, celebrating with a vibrant festival.
The Main Event: Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2026
The much-anticipated
Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival is scheduled for November 20th and 21st, 2026. This annual event has grown from a local celebration into one of Northeast India's premier music and cultural festivals. For 2026, the festival is moving to a new, larger permanent venue at the New Shillong Highland Grounds in Mahmawdkuk to accommodate the growing crowds. The two-day event combines the natural beauty of the blossoms with a packed schedule of live music, featuring international and Indian artists. This year's announced headliners include American R&B star Khalid, rapper Swae Lee, and pop-rock band Boys Like Girls. Beyond the main stage, visitors can explore stalls featuring local Khasi cuisine, traditional crafts, and art installations, making it a comprehensive cultural experience.
When and Where to Find the Pink Scenery
While the festival is on specific dates, the cherry blossoms themselves, from the Himalayan Wild Cherry tree, typically bloom from late October through mid-November. For travellers whose main goal is to see the flowers, arriving in the first two weeks of November might offer the peak viewing experience, as the festival dates fall towards the end of the natural bloom window. The blossoms are not confined to a single park but are spread across the city. The most rewarding spots for 'blossom-hunting' include the iconic Ward's Lake, the serene Shillong Golf Course, the area around Polo Grounds, and the roads leading towards Upper Shillong and Mawphlang. An early morning walk around Ward's Lake, before the crowds arrive, offers the best light for photography.
Planning Your November Trip
November is considered one of the best months to visit Meghalaya, as the monsoon has passed, leaving behind clear skies and pleasant weather. Daytime temperatures in Shillong hover between 12°C and 20°C, while nights are chilly, dropping to around 8-10°C, so packing layers is essential. The most convenient way to reach Shillong is by flying into Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), which is well-connected to major Indian cities. From Guwahati, it's a scenic 3-4 hour drive to Shillong, and shared taxis or reserved cabs are readily available. Due to the festival's popularity, it is crucial to book flights and accommodation well in advance, as hotels in Shillong, especially those near the city centre, get fully booked weeks ahead.
Beyond the Blossoms: Other November Attractions
While the cherry blossoms are the star attraction, November's clear weather makes it an ideal time to explore the wider wonders of Meghalaya. A day trip to Cherrapunji (Sohra) is a must to see the majestic Nohkalikai Falls and explore the stunning Mawsmai Cave. Another essential experience is visiting the living root bridges, particularly the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat. The crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River in Dawki are at their most transparent during this poststmonsoon period, perfect for a memorable boat ride. For breathtaking panoramic views, head to Laitlum Canyons, which translates to 'the end of the hills'. Just a short drive from Shillong, the Mawphlang Sacred Grove offers a tranquil escape into a forest revered by the Khasi community for centuries.
