The Hidden Power of Water
The primary reason for the rapid degradation of roads during the monsoon is the sheer power and persistence of water. Heavy rainfall doesn't just sit on the surface; it seeps into every crack and pore of the asphalt and the soil beneath. This process,
known as water ingress, is the first step in a chain reaction of decay. As water penetrates the road's layers, it weakens the sub-base, the foundation upon which the road is built. The constant pressure from passing vehicles on this waterlogged foundation creates a pumping action, forcing water to break apart the pavement from within and leading to the sudden appearance of potholes and cracks.
Flash Floods: From Dry to Deluge in Minutes
A flash flood is a sudden and rapid surge of water that can occur within minutes to a few hours of heavy rainfall. In urban areas, concrete and asphalt surfaces prevent rainwater from being absorbed into the ground. This runoff is channelled into drainage systems that are often clogged with debris or are simply overwhelmed by the volume of water, causing streets to turn into rivers. It takes surprisingly little water to create a deadly situation; just six inches of moving water can cause a car to lose control, and two feet can sweep away even a large SUV. Underpasses and low-lying areas are particularly dangerous as they flood first and the depth can be deceptive.
Landslides: When the Earth Gives Way
In hilly and mountainous regions, the danger is even more acute. Landslides are often triggered when prolonged rain saturates the soil on a steep slope. This saturation does two things: it dramatically increases the weight of the soil, and it fills the microscopic gaps between soil particles with water. This internal water pressure pushes the particles apart, drastically reducing the friction that holds the slope together. Sometimes, the water pools on top of impermeable bedrock, creating a slick surface. At a tipping point, this heavy, lubricated topsoil can suddenly slide off the rock face, sending tons of mud, rock, and debris crashing onto the road below with little to no warning.
Hydroplaning and Other Surface Risks
Even on a road that isn't flooded or blocked, the risk is high. Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds up between your tyres and the road surface, leading to a complete loss of traction and control. This can happen at speeds as low as 50 kmph in heavy rain. Furthermore, painted road markings, such as zebra crossings, become exceptionally slippery when wet, and braking hard on them can easily lead to a skid. The reduced visibility from heavy downpours and spray from larger vehicles compounds these dangers, making it harder to spot hazards in time.
Your Monsoon Travel Safety Checklist
Given these risks, preparation and caution are your best defences. Before any monsoon journey, check your vehicle's essential systems: tyres (tread depth is crucial for grip), brakes, and windscreen wipers. Always check the weather forecast for your entire route before you leave. While on the road, reduce your speed, double the safe following distance you would normally keep, and use your low-beam headlights for better visibility, even during the day. Never attempt to drive through waterlogged roads if you cannot gauge the depth; it is always safer to turn back. If your car stalls in water, do not try to restart it, as this can cause catastrophic engine damage. In hilly areas, be extra vigilant for signs of an impending landslide, such as trickles of mud or falling rocks, and avoid travelling after dark.
