A November 1 Target Date
Frequent travellers between India's financial and tech capitals have reason to be optimistic. Officials, including the Union Minister of State for Railways, have indicated that the inaugural run of the Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat sleeper could happen
on November 1, coinciding with Karnataka Rajyotsava. This new service is poised to be a game-changer, promising to slash the current travel time of 22-24 hours on existing trains like the Udyan Express to a much more manageable 16 to 18 hours. The service, approved earlier this year, will be the second Vande Bharat sleeper in the country and the first for southern India, marking a significant milestone in the modernisation of overnight rail travel.
The Timetable Conundrum
Despite the targeted launch, a crucial piece of the puzzle is missing: the official schedule. Finalising a timetable for a new premium train on one of India's busiest rail networks is a complex task. Railway officials need to find a viable slot that doesn't disrupt the dense traffic of existing long-distance and suburban services, especially within the congested Mumbai network. A trial run has already been conducted on the Mumbai-Pune section. However, the final route, official station halts, fare structure, and the date when reservations will open are all pending confirmation from the Railway Board. Tentative schedules have been floated, suggesting late-night departures from both ends, but these remain unconfirmed until an official announcement is made.
Redefining Overnight Travel
The introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper is more than just a new train; it represents a significant upgrade to the overnight travel experience. Unlike the existing Rajdhani Express, the Vande Bharat is a self-propelled trainset, which allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, contributing to shorter journey times. The train is designed to run at a top speed of 160 kmph, though actual speeds will depend on track conditions. The planned 16-coach rake will consist of one First AC, four AC Two-Tier, and eleven AC Three-Tier coaches, with a total capacity of 823 berths. This provides a modern, fully air-conditioned alternative for a route that has long been a pain point for passengers seeking faster rail connectivity.
What to Expect Onboard
Passenger comfort and modern amenities are at the core of the Vande Bharat sleeper's design. The interiors are inspired by European trains, featuring cushioned berths with improved designs for easier access to the upper bunks. Each passenger will have access to individual reading lights and charging points. The coaches will also feature fully sealed gangways for a quieter and cleaner environment, bio-vacuum toilets similar to those in aircraft, and advanced safety features like the KAVACH anti-collision system. Furthermore, the train promises a smoother, jerk-free ride compared to conventional trains, aiming to make the 16-hour journey as comfortable as possible.
