A New Policy Opens the Final Frontier
The transformation of India's space industry began in earnest in June 2020, when the government officially opened the sector to private participation. This landmark decision was not just about inviting investment; it was a strategic move to unburden the Indian
Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from routine manufacturing and operations, allowing it to focus on advanced research, deep-space exploration, and national security missions. To oversee this new landscape, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) was established. Acting as a single-window agency, IN-SPACe is responsible for authorising, promoting, and regulating the activities of private players, ensuring they have access to ISRO’s world-class facilities and expertise. This policy shift has created a symbiotic relationship: ISRO provides the foundational support and technological mentorship, while private startups bring agility, innovation, and commercial drive.
3D Printing a Path to Orbit
Among the most exciting technological advancements is the use of additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, in rocket engine development. Chennai-based startup Agnikul Cosmos is at the forefront of this innovation with its 'Agnilet' engine, the world's first single-piece 3D-printed rocket engine. This technology dramatically reduces manufacturing time and complexity by eliminating the need for assembling thousands of individual components, which also enhances reliability. Agnikul’s Agnibaan rocket, powered by this semi-cryogenic engine, is designed for launching small satellites on demand. The successful test launch of its technology demonstrator, Agnibaan SOrTeD, from India's first private launchpad, marked a significant milestone, proving that complex, homegrown engine technology can be developed and flown successfully.
Building India’s Private Rocket Fleet
While Agnikul masters 3D-printed engines, Hyderabad's Skyroot Aerospace is making history with its Vikram series of launch vehicles. In November 2022, its Vikram-S became the first privately developed Indian rocket to reach space. This suborbital flight was a crucial testbed, validating around 80% of the technologies used in its larger, orbital-class rocket, Vikram-1. In a landmark achievement for the nation's private space sector, the Vikram-1 successfully completed its maiden orbital flight in July 2026, making Skyroot the first Indian private company to achieve this feat. Designed to serve the burgeoning global market for small satellite launches, the Vikram rockets are built for rapid deployment and cost-effectiveness, positioning India as a competitive player in the international launch services market.
A Sharper Vision from Above
The innovation isn't limited to launch vehicles. Bengaluru-based Pixxel is building a constellation of the world's most advanced hyperspectral imaging satellites. Unlike conventional satellites that capture images in a few bands of light (like red, green, and blue), Pixxel’s satellites capture data across hundreds of spectral bands. This provides an unprecedented level of detail, creating a 'health monitor for the planet'. The technology can detect issues invisible to the naked eye, such as early-stage crop diseases, sources of pollution, water stress, and mineral deposits. With several satellites already in orbit and more planned, Pixxel is generating a new class of data that can drive decision-making in agriculture, environmental management, mining, and even national security.
The Building Blocks of Space
Beyond complete rockets and complex satellites, companies like Dhruva Space are creating the crucial building blocks of the space ecosystem. The Hyderabad-based firm offers full-stack space engineering solutions, specialising in modular satellite platforms. Their portfolio includes a range of satellite buses, from tiny CubeSats to larger microsatellites, which other companies can use as the foundation for their own missions. Dhruva also provides essential components like solar arrays and orbital deployers, which are critical for releasing satellites into their correct orbits. By offering 'satellite-as-a-service' and other integrated solutions, Dhruva is lowering the barrier to entry for new players and helping to create a robust domestic supply chain for space hardware.
