Not Using the Master List
The single biggest mistake during a high-traffic booking is manually typing every passenger's name, age, and gender. The IRCTC Rail Connect app has a 'Master List' feature designed specifically to solve this. Well before you plan to book, navigate to the
'My Account' section and pre-save the details of all frequent travellers, including yourself. You can add up to 20 passengers. This allows you to simply select passengers from a list, saving crucial seconds that are often the difference between a confirmed ticket and a waitlisted one.
Entering Incorrect Details
A hurried booking often leads to typos in names, ages, or ID details. It is critical to ensure that the name you enter matches the one on the government-issued ID card the passenger will be carrying. Once a ticket is booked, these core details cannot be changed. Mismatches can lead to issues during the ticket-checking process. Using the Master List helps prevent this, as you only need to verify the details once when you save them, not every time you book.
Being Too Rigid with Berth Preferences
Everyone wants a lower berth, but being too specific during rush hour can work against you. While the app allows you to set a berth preference (Lower, Middle, Upper, etc.), the system prioritises finding any available seat first. If your preferred berth type is gone, insisting on it might lead to a failed booking. A better strategy during Tatkal or high-demand bookings is to have a flexible preference or leave it blank. Securing any confirmed seat is better than getting no seat at all because you were too selective.
Fumbling with Payment at the Last Second
You have successfully filled in all the details, but your booking fails at the payment gateway. This is a common and heartbreaking scenario. Slow net banking servers or fumbling to find your credit card can waste precious time. The fastest payment methods are typically UPI and the IRCTC e-Wallet. It is highly recommended to have your UPI app ready or to pre-load money into the IRCTC e-Wallet before the booking window opens. This turns the payment process into a one-click affair, drastically increasing your chances of success.
Ignoring Special Quotas or Options
The passenger details form has specific checkboxes for options like 'Consider for Auto Upgradation' or for concessions available to senior citizens and persons with disabilities. In the rush, it's easy to overlook these. For instance, selecting 'Book only if confirm berths are allotted' can prevent you from ending up with a waitlisted ticket when you only want a confirmed one. Taking a moment to understand and select these options correctly can save you from hassle and ensure your booking aligns with your actual travel needs.
Not Knowing Your Station Codes
Typing 'Mumbai' into the station search box presents you with a dozen options, from 'Mumbai Central' to 'Lokmanya Tilak Terminus'. Hesitating here wastes time. Before you start the booking process, know the exact station names and their official codes (e.g., CSTM for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, NDLS for New Delhi). Having these ready, either in your mind or noted down, eliminates confusion and helps you move through the initial search page swiftly. Speed is essential from the very first step.
