Cleanse Gently, But Thoroughly
The foundation of any good monsoon routine is proper cleansing. High humidity means more sweat, which mixes with excess oil and environmental pollutants, creating a perfect recipe for clogged pores. While it's tempting to wash your face multiple times
a day, overwashing can strip your skin of its natural moisture, causing it to produce even more oil in response. Stick to cleansing twice a day with a gentle, gel-based, or foaming cleanser. Look for products containing salicylic acid, which is excellent for oily skin as it penetrates pores to dissolve excess sebum and dead skin cells.
Don't Skip Moisturiser
One of the biggest myths is that oily skin doesn't need moisturiser, especially in humid weather. This is false. When your skin is dehydrated, it can overcompensate by producing more oil. The trick is to choose the right product. Ditch heavy creams and opt for a lightweight, oil-free, and non-comedogenic moisturiser. Gel-based or water-based formulas with ingredients like hyaluronic acid are perfect as they provide hydration without adding greasiness or clogging pores. This helps maintain your skin's protective barrier and keeps it balanced.
Embrace a Targeted Serum
A serum is a great way to deliver potent, active ingredients directly to your skin. For oily, acne-prone skin during the monsoon, a serum with Niacinamide is a game-changer. Niacinamide helps regulate sebum production, which reduces overall oiliness, and it also works to minimise the appearance of pores and calms inflammation. Other beneficial ingredients to look for in a serum or toner include green tea and zinc, which can help control breakouts and soothe the skin. Apply a few drops after cleansing and before moisturising.
Weekly Exfoliation and Masking
Regular exfoliation is crucial for removing dead skin cells that can clog pores, but it's important to be gentle. Avoid harsh physical scrubs, which can irritate the skin and cause inflammation. Instead, opt for a chemical exfoliant with ingredients like Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid once or twice a week. Complement this with a weekly clay mask. Masks with kaolin or bentonite clay are excellent for absorbing excess oil and drawing out impurities from the pores, leaving your skin feeling clean and refreshed.
Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable
Don't let cloudy skies fool you; harmful UV rays can penetrate clouds and damage your skin. Sunscreen is a must every single day, regardless of the weather. For oily skin, the key is to choose a formula that won't feel heavy or greasy. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 that has a lightweight, gel-based, or matte finish. This will provide essential protection without contributing to shine or clogging your pores. Reapply every few hours if you're outdoors or sweating a lot.
Go Minimal with Makeup
Heavy makeup can trap sweat and oil, suffocating your skin and leading to breakouts, especially in high humidity. The monsoon is the perfect time to adopt a more minimalist makeup routine. If you must wear makeup, choose lightweight, water-based, and non-comedogenic products that won't clog your pores. Consider using a mattifying primer to control shine. And always remember to thoroughly remove all makeup at the end of the day to allow your skin to breathe and repair itself overnight.
Hands Off and Blot On-the-Go
Your hands come into contact with dirt and bacteria throughout the day, and touching your face can transfer these impurities to your skin, worsening acne. Make a conscious effort to avoid touching your face. For managing midday shine, blotting papers are your best friend. They quickly absorb excess oil from the skin's surface without disturbing your makeup or stripping your skin's moisture. Keep a pack in your bag for quick and easy touch-ups throughout the day.
