Indian Railways has launched a landmark Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Bengaluru and Mumbai, slashing travel time and ushering in a new era of comfort for overnight passengers on one of the country's most vital economic corridors.
A New Chapter in Overnight Travel
On November 1,
2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper Express from Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru. This launch marks a significant upgrade for the thousands of people who travel regularly between India's tech capital and its financial hub. The service aims to provide a premium, time-efficient alternative to existing trains and a competitive option to air travel. Regular services are set to begin from Mumbai on November 2 and from Bengaluru on November 3, operating six days a week. The train will not run from Bengaluru on Mondays and from Mumbai on Tuesdays.
Cutting the Journey Time Significantly
The most compelling feature of the new service is the drastic reduction in travel time. The train is scheduled to cover the roughly 1,118-kilometre distance in approximately 16 hours. For instance, train number 27651 will depart Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) at 8:10 PM and arrive at SMVT Bengaluru at 12:00 PM the next day, a journey of 15 hours and 50 minutes. The return journey, train number 27652, leaves Bengaluru at 7:45 PM and reaches Mumbai at 11:55 AM. This is a massive improvement compared to existing services like the Udyan Express, which can take over 22 hours, saving passengers between six to eight hours.
Inside the Modern Sleeper
Designed for comfort on long-distance overnight routes, the 16-coach trainset is fully air-conditioned and accommodates 823 passengers. It offers a three-class configuration: one AC First Class coach, four AC Two-Tier coaches, and eleven AC Three-Tier coaches. The berths are designed to be wider and better cushioned, with user-friendly ladders for upper berths. Passenger amenities include individual reading lights, charging points with both standard and USB ports, and sensor-based inter-communication doors. Safety is also a priority, with the train equipped with the Kavach anti-collision system, CCTV cameras, and advanced fire detection systems.
Fares and How to Book
The fare structure positions the Vande Bharat Sleeper as a premium service. For the full journey between Bengaluru and Mumbai, ticket prices are approximately ₹2,810 for AC 3rd Tier, ₹3,630 for AC 2nd Tier, and ₹4,450 for AC First Class, though these prices can vary. Bookings for the service have already commenced and can be made through the official Indian Railways website and associated apps. The train will make eight strategic stops along its route, connecting key cities like Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, and Guntakal, thereby enhancing connectivity across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
A Competitive Choice for Travellers
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is poised to be a game changer for the Bengaluru Mumbai travel corridor. While a direct flight takes only about two hours, when you factor in travel to and from airports, check in times, and security procedures, the total time commitment increases significantly. The train offers a seamless overnight journey, allowing passengers to sleep through the night and arrive at their destination by midday, saving a productive day. Compared to other trains, the time savings are substantial, making it an attractive proposition for business travellers, families, and tourists alike who value both time and comfort. The service is a key part of Indian Railways' broader vision to modernise its fleet and enhance passenger experience nationwide.
