The Silent Threat of Subscription Creep
In the age of digital convenience, signing up for a service is frictionless. A free trial for a streaming platform, a discounted membership for a wellness app, or a premium feature on a productivity tool—all it takes is a quick UPI transaction. But this
ease has a downside: forgotten subscriptions. These small, automatic debits, often just ₹99 or ₹199, can go unnoticed for months. Over time, these seemingly insignificant amounts add up, creating a steady leak in your monthly budget. Simply uninstalling an app doesn't cancel the payment instruction you've given. The UPI mandate often remains active on the bank's server, continuing to pull funds until you formally revoke it. This phenomenon, known as 'subscription creep', is a common blind spot in personal finance management, turning the handiness of UPI into a financial vulnerability.
Understanding UPI AutoPay and Mandates
When you approve a recurring payment, you are creating a UPI 'AutoPay' mandate. Think of it as a digital standing instruction you give your bank through a UPI app. It authorizes a merchant to debit a specific amount from your account at a set frequency (monthly, quarterly, etc.) without you needing to enter your PIN each time. These mandates are regulated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which have set rules to protect consumers. For instance, for most transactions up to ₹15,000, your UPI PIN is only needed for the initial setup. Crucially, regulations also mandate that you must receive a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each payment, giving you a window to act if you no longer want the service. You also retain the right to pause or cancel a mandate at any time directly from your UPI app.
Your Step-by-Step UPI Audit Guide
Performing a UPI audit is straightforward and can be done in minutes. The goal is to find every active recurring payment instruction. While the exact menu names may vary slightly, the process is similar across major UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. First, open your primary UPI app and navigate to your profile or settings. Look for a section named 'AutoPay', 'UPI Mandates', 'My Subscriptions', or 'Automatic Payments'. This will display a list of all your active, and sometimes pending or completed, mandates. Go through this list carefully. For each entry, ask yourself: 'Am I still using this service?' and 'Is this charge providing value?' If the answer is no, it’s time to cancel.
How to Cancel Unwanted Mandates
Once you've identified a subscription to cancel, the process is simple. Select the mandate you wish to stop from the 'AutoPay' or 'Mandates' list in your app. You will typically see options to 'Pause' or 'Cancel' the mandate. Pausing is a temporary stop, whereas cancelling (sometimes called 'Revoking') is permanent. Choose to cancel or revoke the mandate. The app will likely require you to confirm this action by entering your UPI PIN. After confirmation, the mandate status should update to 'Revoked' or 'Cancelled'. It's important to remember that this action only stops future payments from being debited via UPI. It does not cancel your actual subscription with the merchant or necessarily entitle you to a refund for past charges.
The Final Cleanup Step
After revoking the UPI mandate, it is good practice to also cancel the service directly with the merchant. For example, if you cancel a streaming service's UPI mandate, you should also log into your account on the streaming service's website and formally cancel your subscription there. This ensures there are no outstanding dues and prevents the merchant from attempting to charge you through other means or claiming you are still an active subscriber. It's also wise to check your bank statements for a month or two following the cancellation to ensure no further debits are made. Making this two-step process—revoking the mandate and cancelling the service—a habit is the most effective way to protect your salary from unwanted charges and maintain robust financial hygiene.
