A Market Coming of Age
India's pet care market is experiencing a significant boom, with some estimates valuing it at over USD 9.2 billion in 2026. This growth is fueled by a confluence of factors, including rising disposable incomes, urbanization, and a profound cultural shift
in how pets are viewed. Once concentrated in major urban centers like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, the industry's next chapter is being written elsewhere. Recent data shows that while metros remain the largest markets overall, Tier-II cities are posting incredible year-on-year growth in pet care orders, in some cases nearly doubling the pace of their larger counterparts. This expansion signals a maturing market where pet ownership and premium care are becoming mainstream aspirations across the country.
The Humanization of Pet-Parenting
At the core of this economic trend is a deeply personal one: the humanization of pets. Across India, especially among millennial and Gen Z populations, pets are increasingly seen as integral family members, not just animals. This emotional shift from ownership to “pet parenting” is a primary driver of spending. As households, particularly nuclear families, seek companionship, they are more willing to invest in their pets' well-being, including premium food, wellness products, and advanced veterinary services. This trend is no longer exclusive to the metros; the desire to provide the best for a four-legged family member is a sentiment now echoing in cities like Lucknow, Indore, and Nagpur.
Digital Access Unlocks New Markets
The rapid expansion of e-commerce and quick-commerce platforms has been a game-changer, breaking down the distribution barriers that once limited the market to big cities. Platforms like Amazon, Instamart, and specialized online stores such as Supertails and Heads Up For Tails are making a wide array of pet products accessible to consumers in semi-urban and smaller urban areas. This digital infrastructure allows pet parents in cities like Guwahati, Meerut, and Madurai to access the same premium brands and specialized products available in Bengaluru or Mumbai. According to one report based on quick-commerce data, Tier-II and smaller cities posted a staggering 96% year-on-year growth in pet care orders, with Guwahati leading the charge with a growth rate of over 1,400%.
The New Hotspots of Pet Care
While Bengaluru may be India's most indulgent pet market and Mumbai its 'cat capital', the future growth engines are cities that were previously on the periphery of the pet economy. Industry leaders have explicitly noted that Tier-II and Tier-III cities are no longer just potential markets but are current, crucial growth drivers. Cities such as Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Lucknow are becoming significant hubs. Even smaller towns like Kottayam, Dibrugarh, Rajkot, and Siliguri are showing remarkable growth, indicating that the trend is widespread and not limited to a handful of emerging cities. This geographic diversification is creating new opportunities for local entrepreneurs, from groomers to boutique pet stores, catering to a newly empowered consumer base.
What's Next? Premiumization and Services
As the market expands geographically, it is also deepening in terms of offerings. The trend of 'premiumization'—the shift towards higher-quality, specialized products—is taking hold everywhere. This includes demand for grain-free foods, functional treats, and wellness products. Beyond products, the service economy for pets is also poised for growth. While still facing challenges like a shortage of skilled veterinarians and organized infrastructure outside of metros, there is a rising demand for services like professional grooming, pet sitting, and insurance. Startups are increasingly looking to solve these infrastructure gaps, with a focus on tech-enabled solutions like tele-consultations and at-home vet services to reach pet parents nationwide.
