The Annual Festive Scramble
October and November mark one of the busiest periods for Indian Railways. Millions undertake journeys to be with their families for major festivals like Dussehra, Durga Puja, and Diwali. This nationwide movement of people results in an extraordinary demand
for train tickets, with reservations on popular routes filling up within minutes of opening, often 120 days in advance. Regular train services are insufficient to handle this surge, leading to long waiting lists and uncertainty for many travellers. Recognising this annual challenge, Indian Railways implements special measures to ease the burden and provide additional travel options. This is where festive special trains play a crucial role, acting as a lifeline for those looking to travel during this peak season. However, simply knowing about them isn't enough; a strategic approach is needed to successfully book a journey.
Festive Special Trains Announced for 2026
To cater to the festive rush, various railway zones have announced hundreds of special train services. The Central Railway is running 418 special services connecting major hubs like Mumbai and Pune with destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Similarly, the Solapur Division has announced 102 special train trips for Dussehra and Diwali, improving connectivity for cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Latur, and Kolhapur. The Northern Railway is also operating special services connecting Delhi with cities like Varanasi and Ayodhya, and from Chandigarh to Patna, to manage traffic in North India. South Central Railway has introduced special trains on routes such as Charlapalli-Sengottai and Narasapur-Tiruvannamalai for October and November. These trains are not part of the regular schedule and are announced specifically to clear the extra rush on high-demand corridors.
Key Routes and Services to Watch
Several key routes will see enhanced services. Central Railway is operating daily specials between Mumbai (CSMT) and Gorakhpur and weekly AC services between Mumbai and Chennai. Other important connections include Mumbai-Latur, Mumbai-Bengaluru, CSMT-Nagpur, and CSMT-Kolhapur. Northern Railway's services are focused on routes like Varanasi-Delhi and Ayodhya Cantt-Anand Vihar, which will see dozens of trips between October and November. Bookings for many of these special trains, which operate on special charges, opened around September 27, 2026. Passengers are advised to monitor the official IRCTC website and the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) for the full schedule, halt timings, and availability, as more announcements may follow.
Essential Booking Tips and Tricks
Securing a ticket during the festive season requires speed and preparation. The golden rule is to book as early as possible, right when the 120-day Advance Reservation Period (ARP) opens at 8:00 AM. For Tatkal bookings, which open one day before departure at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes, preparation is key. Use the 'Master List' feature on the IRCTC website or app to pre-fill passenger details, saving crucial seconds during the booking process. Ensure you have a fast internet connection and use quick payment methods like UPI or a pre-loaded IRCTC wallet to avoid transaction failures. If your preferred train is full, check for alternative boarding or destination stations just before or after your actual stop, as this can sometimes increase your chances of finding a seat.
Navigating Your Journey Smoothly
Once you've booked your ticket, the planning doesn't stop. With the festive rush, railway authorities often intensify ticket-checking drives. Central Railway has announced a month-long intensive checking drive from October 1 to October 31, 2026. It is mandatory to carry original, valid ID proof, especially if you are travelling on a concession ticket, a pass, or a shared e-ticket. For a shared ticket, at least one passenger must present a valid ID, or all passengers on that ticket may be considered as travelling without a valid ticket. Always double-check your PNR status, especially if you have a waitlisted ticket, as many tickets get confirmed closer to the departure date. Arrive at the station well in advance to account for platform crowds and last-minute changes. Keep an eye on platform number announcements and be prepared for a crowded but festive travel experience.
