is obvious: it’s fast and feels authoritative. But these tools are not built to be correct; they are built to be plausible. They predict the next likely word based on vast datasets, a process that can lead to errors, outdated information, and confidently stated falsehoods known as 'hallucinations'. These can range from recommending adding glue to pizza to fabricating academic citations that look completely real.
Why Old Verification Tricks Fall Short
Traditional digital literacy often focused on evaluating a website itself: checking the URL, looking for an 'About Us' page, or spotting a biased tone. These methods are still useful, but less effective when the information is presented by an AI, stripped from its original context. The AI acts as a middleman, and its confident tone can mask a weak or non-existent source. A student might see a perfectly formatted but completely fabricated statistic or a quote attributed to the wrong expert. Skill 1: Master Lateral Reading
The single most important skill for the AI era is lateral reading. Instead of reading 'down' a single article to evaluate it, professional fact-checkers immediately open new tabs to read 'laterally' across several different sources. When an AI presents a claim, the first step is to leave the AI platform. Search for the key names, statistics, or events mentioned in the AI's answer on a standard search engine. See what other independent, reputable sources—like established news organisations, academic journals, or government websites—have to say. This practice helps you quickly get a sense of the information's reliability before you invest time in reading it closely.
Skill 2: Always Go to the Original Source
Many AI search tools now provide citations or links to their sources. It is tempting to trust the summary and move on, but this is where errors hide. Students must develop the habit of treating the AI summary as a starting point, not a final answer. Click on the links. Read the original article to see if the AI summary is accurate and reflects the full context. Sometimes, an AI will distort the findings of a real study or pull a quote out of context. In other cases, it may 'hallucinate' a source entirely, creating a reference to an article that doesn't exist. The only way to know for sure is to check.
Skill 3: Question Your Own Questions
The way a question is phrased can heavily influence an AI's response. Leading or biased prompts can produce skewed answers. Students need to learn to approach AI with a spirit of critical inquiry, not just as a machine that fetches answers. This involves thinking about how their own assumptions are shaping the query. Educators suggest turning verification into an active process. For example, after getting an answer, students can use follow-up prompts like, "What are some alternative perspectives on this?" or "Provide sources that disagree with this conclusion." This teaches them to treat the AI's first response as one of many possibilities, not the definitive truth.
Building a Healthy Skepticism
Ultimately, using AI for research requires a new mindset. It's about treating the tool like a helpful but sometimes unreliable assistant whose work always needs to be double-checked. Instead of banning these tools, educators and parents can help students develop a healthy skepticism. Turning fact-checking into a game or a regular habit can build these critical muscles. Activities can include comparing answers from different AI models to spot discrepancies or using reverse image search to verify AI-generated pictures. The goal is to empower students to navigate the digital world with curiosity and confidence, using AI as a tool to enhance their thinking, not replace it.
