You walk into the gym, and the blast of cool air feels like a refuge from the sticky monsoon humidity outside. But here's the catch: while air conditioning cools the air, it often struggles to completely eliminate the high moisture content typical of the rainy
season. Commercial AC systems do dehumidify, but when the outside air is already saturated with water, the indoor environment becomes a unique mix of cool temperature and surprisingly high humidity. This creates a challenging environment for your body's natural cooling system, even if the thermometer shows a comfortable temperature.
Why You Feel Stickier and Work Harder
Your body's primary cooling method is sweat evaporation. When you perspire, the liquid on your skin turns into vapour, taking heat with it. In dry conditions, this process is highly efficient. However, in the humid air of a monsoon-season gym, the air is already holding a lot of water vapour, so there's less 'room' for your sweat to evaporate. Instead of vanishing and cooling you down, the sweat clings to your skin, making you feel sticky and damp. To compensate for this inefficient cooling, your body's response is to sweat even more. Your system goes into overdrive, trying to shed heat, which increases your heart rate and makes the workout feel significantly harder than it would in dry conditions at the same temperature.
What's Happening to Your Sweat?
The headline's claim of altered sweat 'composition' is more about quantity than quality. The main change isn't a dramatic shift in the chemical makeup of each drop of sweat, but rather the sheer volume of sweat you lose. Because you are sweating more profusely to try and cool down, the total loss of water and crucial minerals called electrolytes—like sodium, potassium, and chloride—is significantly higher. This useless loss of water and electrolytes, which doesn't contribute to cooling because it's not evaporating effectively, puts you at a much greater risk of dehydration. Losing as little as 2% of your body weight in fluid can start to negatively impact your performance.
Your Monsoon Replenishment Plan
Because you're losing more than just water, your hydration strategy needs an upgrade. Sipping plain water is essential, but it might not be enough during and after a particularly intense, sweaty session in high humidity. To properly replenish, you need to replace the lost electrolytes as well. Before Your Workout: Start hydrating a couple of hours before you hit the gym. Arriving at your workout already hydrated is key. During Your Workout: For workouts over 60 minutes, consider an electrolyte drink to replace the sodium and potassium you're losing in real-time. This helps maintain fluid balance and prevent muscle cramps. After Your Workout: This is the critical window for recovery. Your goal is to replace the fluids and electrolytes lost. Natural options like coconut water are excellent as they are rich in potassium. Otherwise, a dedicated sports drink or an oral rehydration solution can be very effective. Weighing yourself before and after a workout can give you a precise idea of how much fluid you've lost and need to replace.
Listen to Your Body's Warning Signs
It's crucial to recognise the early signs of dehydration, which are amplified in humid conditions. Don't wait until you feel thirsty, as that's already a sign you're dehydrated. Watch for symptoms like dizziness, unusual fatigue, headache, muscle cramps, and a noticeable decrease in performance. If you experience any of these, it's time to stop, cool down, and rehydrate with an electrolyte-rich fluid immediately. Pushing through can increase your risk of more serious heat-related illnesses.
