Understanding the New Programmes
IIT Bombay has recently introduced two distinct online programmes: an e-Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (CS & AI) and an e-Postgraduate Diploma in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AI & DS). The CS & AI programme is a 12-month
course focused on building a strong foundation in both computer science and modern AI. The AI & DS programme, offered through the Centre for Machine Intelligence and Data Science (C-MInDS), is an 18-month course aimed at early to mid-career professionals, focusing on AI, Machine Learning, and Data Science applications. Both are delivered by IIT Bombay's faculty in partnership with EdTech platform Great Learning, blending online learning with an in-person campus component.
Curriculum and Specialisation
The core of any educational programme is its curriculum. The 12-month CS & AI diploma requires completing six courses, balancing computer science fundamentals with AI specialisations like Generative AI, large language models (LLMs), and deep learning. The 18-month AI & DS diploma offers a deep dive into topics like Statistical Foundations of Machine Learning, Deep Learning and GenAI, and AI-ML in Practice, with electives in areas such as NLP and Computer Vision. A key differentiator is the tools you will master. The AI & DS course explicitly lists Python, TensorFlow, Keras, Hugging Face, and PyTorch among its key tools. Prospective students should analyse which curriculum better aligns with their career goals—a broader CS foundation or a deeper, application-focused AI and data science track.
Faculty, Flexibility, and Alumni Status
A major draw for these programmes is that they are designed and delivered by IIT Bombay's esteemed faculty. This ensures a high standard of academic rigour. Both programmes offer a flexible structure. The one-year CS & AI diploma can be completed over three years, while the 18-month AI & DS programme is designed for working professionals. A significant perk for both is the awarding of IIT Bombay alumni status upon successful completion, which provides access to a powerful professional network. The programmes also include an in-person graduation ceremony on campus, offering a tangible connection to the prestigious institution.
Cost vs. Potential Return on Investment
Premium education comes at a price. The 18-month e-PG Diploma in AI and Data Science has a total fee of ₹6,00,000 plus GST. While fees for the newer CS & AI diploma are not as explicitly stated in initial announcements, similar executive courses from top IITs often fall within a comparable range. Is it worth it? The demand for AI specialists in India is undeniable. NASSCOM projects demand will cross one million roles soon. Entry-level salaries for roles like Data Scientist and Machine Learning Engineer in India typically range from ₹5 LPA to ₹14 LPA, with significant growth potential. An IIT certification can provide a considerable advantage in salary negotiations and career progression.
Comparing the Alternatives
IIT Bombay is not the only top institution offering AI programmes. IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Guwahati also have certificate and even BSc programmes in AI and Data Science. Many are offered in partnership with platforms like Coursera and Emeritus. For instance, IIT Madras Pravartak offers a 6-month professional certificate in AI/ML for around ₹1.5L. For those on a tighter budget, NPTEL, a joint initiative of the IITs and IISc, offers free 12-week online courses where you only pay a nominal fee for the examination and certification. When comparing, students must weigh factors like duration, depth of curriculum, cost, faculty interaction, and the value of the final certification and alumni network.
