Coorg, Karnataka: The Scotland of India
Often called the ‘Scotland of India’, Kodagu, or Coorg, transforms into a mystical paradise during the monsoon season. The rolling hills, draped in coffee plantations and dense forests, are frequently blanketed in thick, low-hanging clouds. For the quintessential
'cloud walk', head to Raja's Seat, a scenic garden offering panoramic views. During the rains (June to September), the entire valley below vanishes under a sea of white mist. As you stand at the viewpoint, gusts of wind carry clouds right through the pavilion, making you feel as if you’re walking on air. The experience is ethereal, with the scent of wet earth and fresh coffee blossoms filling the air. It’s a photographer’s delight and a nature lover’s dream, offering a simple yet profound connection with the elements.
Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu: A Stroll on Coaker's Walk
Perched in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal is famously known as the 'Princess of Hill Stations'. Its most iconic 'cloud walk' is along Coaker's Walk, a kilometre-long paved pedestrian path carved into the steep mountain slopes. On a clear day, the views of the plains are stunning. But visit on a misty morning, and the experience is entirely different. The entire path becomes an elevated walkway through the clouds. If you're exceptionally lucky, you might witness a rare phenomenon called the 'Brocken Spectre', where your shadow is cast onto the clouds below, surrounded by a rainbow halo. This magical optical illusion, combined with the cool, misty embrace of the clouds, makes a simple stroll feel like a journey through another world.
Mawryngkhang, Meghalaya: The Bamboo Skywalk
For the more adventurous soul, the Mawryngkhang Trek in Meghalaya offers a thrilling way to walk among the clouds. Known as the 'scariest trek in Meghalaya', it involves navigating a series of bamboo bridges and ladders cantilevered off the sheer rock face of a mountain, high above a roaring river. Meghalaya, the 'Abode of Clouds', lives up to its name here. Trekkers are often completely enveloped in mist, with the bamboo path being the only visible guide. The adrenaline of the height, combined with the serene, almost blinding white of the clouds, creates an unforgettable sensory experience. This isn't a gentle stroll but a heart-pounding pilgrimage that rewards you with the feeling of conquering a path built by human ingenuity in the heart of nature’s domain.
Thenmala, Kerala: India's First Ecotourism Project
Deep within the Western Ghats in Kerala lies Thenmala, India’s first planned ecotourism destination. Its star attraction is the elevated Canopy Walkway, a 120-metre-long series of bridges that winds through the treetops. While it offers a fantastic bird's-eye view of the forest floor year-round, visiting during or just after the monsoon is when the magic happens. The morning mist settles in the valley, rising to the level of the walkway. Stepping onto the slightly swaying bridge feels like entering a different realm. You are at eye-level with the canopy, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest, with clouds drifting gently past you. It provides a unique perspective on the forest ecosystem, allowing you to experience the upper layers of the jungle where much of its life thrives, all while wrapped in a cool, misty blanket.
Matheran, Maharashtra: Asia's Only Automobile-Free Hill Station
Just a short journey from Mumbai and Pune, Matheran offers a complete escape into a pollution-free world. With all vehicles banned within the town, the air is clean and the atmosphere is serene. During the monsoon, the entire hill station is engulfed in a thick, persistent fog. The various viewpoints, or 'points', such as Louisa Point and Porcupine Point, become gateways to the clouds. The short treks through the red-soiled paths of the forest lead you to cliff edges where the world simply dissolves into a white void. You can sit on a bench and watch the clouds roll in, obscuring everything in a matter of seconds before parting again to offer a fleeting glimpse of the waterfalls cascading down the surrounding hills. It's a peaceful, meditative experience that feels a world away from city life.
