[35] The coastal route (NH-66) is more scenic, winding through the lush Konkan coast with its fishing villages and forts. [35] For backpackers, sharing fuel costs in a car or taking an overnight bus are economical options. [20] Once in Goa, beach shacks and hostels provide affordable stays, making this a perfect sun-soaked escape.
Chennai to Pondicherry
This is one of the most beautiful coastal drives in South India, stretching about 160 kilometres along the famed East Coast Road (ECR). [12] The journey itself is an attraction, with the Bay of Bengal on one side for most of the way. Key stops include the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mahabalipuram, with its ancient temples, and the Alamparai Fort ruins. [12, 16] The drive is short, taking 3-4 hours, making it an ideal and affordable weekend trip. [12] Pondicherry's French Quarter and affordable guesthouses await at the end. [12]
Bangalore to Hampi
Journey back in time on this 350-kilometre drive from India's tech hub to the ancient ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire. [11] The route via NH-48 and NH-50 is smooth and takes about 6-7 hours. [14, 17] Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a backpacker's dream with its otherworldly boulder-strewn landscape, magnificent temples, and the iconic stone chariot. Guwahati to Tawang
A road trip into the heart of the Eastern Himalayas, this route is for the truly adventurous. The journey is long and requires multiple days, with strategic night halts in towns like Dirang or Bomdila. [18, 30] The drive takes you through dramatic landscapes, from lush valleys to the snow-covered Sela Pass at 13,700 feet. [18, 32] Tawang itself is home to the stunning Tawang Monastery. Shimla to Spiti Valley
Often done as a circuit trip ending in Manali, this route is a high-altitude desert adventure. Starting from Shimla allows for better acclimatization as you gain altitude gradually. Jaipur to Ranthambore
Combine history with wildlife on this relatively short road trip of about 180 kilometres in Rajasthan. The drive from the Pink City to the famous Ranthambore National Park takes about 3-4 hours. [36, 43] While the main attraction is the tiger safari, the journey itself through rural Rajasthan is fascinating. To keep it budget-friendly, travel in a small group to share the cost of a cab. Kolkata to the Sundarbans
