Welcome to Saputara, Gujarat's Monsoon Jewel
Nestled in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats, Saputara is a charming and accessible hill station located in Gujarat's Dang district. Standing at an altitude of about 1,000 metres, it offers a refreshing escape with a climate that remains pleasant
year-round. However, it's during the monsoon months, from July to September, that Saputara truly comes alive. The entire region sheds its summer coat and dons a vibrant, emerald-green mantle, with waterfalls cascading down the hillsides and a gentle mist that hangs in the air, creating a magical atmosphere.
The Art of Cloud Chasing
The phrase 'cloud chasers' perfectly captures the essence of a monsoon visit to Saputara. This isn't an extreme sport but a serene experience. The low-hanging monsoon clouds often descend upon the hills, enveloping everything in a thick, white fog. You can literally walk through the clouds at various viewpoints. Driving through the winding ghat roads feels like a journey through the sky. Popular spots like Sunrise Point and Sunset Point, though their main attractions might be obscured by fog, offer a different kind of beauty. They become ethereal platforms where you are surrounded by swirling mists, making for an unforgettable, immersive experience of nature.
Monsoon Must-Dos in and Around Saputara
While the weather might call for flexibility, a Saputara monsoon trip is packed with potential activities. A boat ride on the serene Saputara Lake is a classic experience, offering picturesque views of the surrounding green hills. For a panoramic view of the fog-covered valleys, the Ropeway is a must-try, though its operation is weather dependent. A short drive away, the Gira Waterfalls become a powerful and breathtaking spectacle during the rains. This seasonal waterfall, with water dropping from a height of about 30 metres, is a popular spot for a reason. To connect with the region's heritage, visit the Saputara Tribal Museum, which offers a glimpse into the life and culture of the local Dangi tribes.
Embracing Local Flavours and Culture
Beyond the natural landscapes, Saputara offers a rich cultural experience. The Artist Village is a great place to see and buy tribal handicrafts made by local artisans. When it comes to food, the cool monsoon weather is perfect for enjoying hot, local delicacies. From steaming cups of tea and roasted corn on the cob sold by street vendors to traditional Gujarati thalis available at local eateries, there’s plenty to savour. Don't miss out on trying regional specialties that reflect the culture of the Dang district. The Gujarat government often organises a Saputara Monsoon Festival, which adds another layer of cultural vibrancy with events and activities.
Planning Your Monsoon Getaway
Saputara is well-connected by road and is a popular drive from cities like Surat (around 160 km), Mumbai (around 250 km), and Ahmedabad (around 400 km). The nearest railway station is Bilimora, about 50 km away, from where you can hire taxis or take a bus. Given the monsoon conditions, it's wise to drive cautiously on the ghat roads. Pack light woollens or a jacket as the evenings can get chilly, and a raincoat or umbrella is non-negotiable. Waterproof footwear is also recommended for exploring. While booking accommodation, you'll find a range of options from budget hotels to more comfortable resorts, but it's always a good idea to book in advance, especially for weekend trips.
