The Simple Goodness of Plain Curd
Plain curd, or dahi, is a staple in most Indian households. We know its benefits for our own health, but many pet owners are discovering it's a fantastic supplement for their dogs, too. When we talk about curd for dogs, we are strictly referring to plain,
unsweetened, and unflavoured curd. This is not the sweet, fruit-flavoured variety you might enjoy for dessert. The foundation of its benefit lies in its simplicity: it’s a fermented dairy product packed with nutrients, offering a natural and easily digestible option for most canines.
A Boost for Gut Health and More
The primary benefit of curd comes from its probiotics—the 'good' bacteria that support a healthy gut microbiome. A healthy gut is the cornerstone of a strong immune system, improved digestion, and better nutrient absorption. For puppies with sensitive stomachs or dogs recovering from a bout of digestive upset, a small spoonful of plain curd can help restore balance. Beyond probiotics, curd is also a good source of protein, which is essential for muscle development and repair, and calcium, which supports strong bones and teeth. For a growing pup, these nutritional boosts can be particularly beneficial as part of a balanced diet.
Why Freezing Makes It Better
While plain curd is great on its own, freezing it transforms it into a versatile and even more enjoyable treat. Firstly, it’s an excellent way to help your dog cool down on a hot day. A frozen curd cube is a refreshing, long-lasting snack that can prevent overheating. Secondly, for teething puppies, the cold, hard texture provides soothing relief for sore gums. It gives them something appropriate to chew on, saving your furniture and shoes from their exploratory bites. Finally, freezing the curd turns it into a 'slow-feed' treat. Instead of gobbling it down in seconds, your dog has to lick and chew at the frozen block, providing mental stimulation and preventing them from eating too quickly.
How to Prepare Frozen Curd Treats
Making these treats is incredibly simple. All you need is plain, homemade or store-bought curd and an ice cube tray. 1. **Choose the Right Curd:** Ensure it is completely plain. It must not contain any sugar, artificial sweeteners (especially xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs), or flavourings. 2. **Portion it Out:** Spoon the curd into a standard ice cube tray. This creates perfectly portioned treats. For a longer-lasting challenge, you can also fill a Kong toy with curd and freeze it. 3. **Freeze Solid:** Place the tray or toy in the freezer for at least four to five hours, or until the curd is completely solid. 4. **Serve and Store:** Pop a cube out and offer it to your dog as a treat. You can store the remaining frozen cubes in a freezer-safe bag for easy access. It’s a perfect reward after a walk or on a particularly hot afternoon.
Important Precautions to Remember
While curd is healthy, it’s not suitable for all dogs, and moderation is key. Some dogs are lactose intolerant and may experience gas, bloating, or diarrhoea after consuming dairy. When introducing curd for the first time, give only a very small amount (half a teaspoon) and monitor your dog for any adverse reactions over the next 24 hours. If they tolerate it well, you can gradually increase the amount. Remember that treats should only make up about 10% of your dog's daily caloric intake. One or two frozen curd cubes are plenty for a medium-sized dog. Always check with your vet before introducing any new food into your pet’s diet, especially if they have pre-existing health conditions.
