A strange reality is unfolding across India's higher education sector. On one hand, student demand for technology and data-driven courses like Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Cybersecurity is skyrocketing. On the other, the very institutions
that offer them are under pressure. During the 2025-26 academic year alone, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved the 'progressive closure' of 58 engineering and technical colleges. This means they will no longer accept new students. Further, over 950 courses were discontinued nationwide during the same period. The reasons are complex, ranging from low admissions in certain traditional programs to faculty shortages and a failure to meet regulatory standards. This has created a bottleneck, where more aspiring students are competing for a shrinking pool of seats in the most desirable fields.
Which Courses Are In Focus?
The most sought-after courses promise high growth and strong salary potential. Fields like AI & Machine Learning, Data Science, Cloud Computing, and Cybersecurity are projected to see job growth ranging from 25% to 40% by 2030. Engineering, particularly in computer science, remains a pillar of the tech industry. However, running these programs is expensive, requiring state-of-the-art infrastructure and highly specialized faculty, which contributes to the challenges faced by many private colleges. Simultaneously, a broader regulatory focus on quality over quantity by bodies like the University Grants Commission (UGC) is leading to stricter norms and consolidation in the sector. This leaves students aiming for these high-demand specializations in a tough spot.
Strategy 1: Look Beyond the Obvious
The traditional path of targeting only the most famous colleges in metropolitan hubs is becoming less viable. A smart strategy is to broaden your search to include newer, promising institutions in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Many of these colleges are investing heavily in modern infrastructure and industry partnerships for courses in AI, data science, and digital marketing.
