North India: Clear Skies and Pleasant Days
For those planning a trip to the mountains or the historic plains of the north, the weather outlook for October is overwhelmingly positive. The southwest monsoon has officially withdrawn from Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana,
Rajasthan, and most of Uttar Pradesh. This translates to clear skies, bright sunshine, and comfortable temperatures, making it an ideal time for sightseeing and travel. Destinations like Jaipur, Udaipur, Delhi, and Agra are expected to remain largely dry. While most of Himachal and Uttarakhand will be pleasant, there is a forecast for isolated to scattered rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly between October 5 and 10. Travellers to higher altitudes should also be mindful of the possibility of early-season snow.
West India: A Tale of Two Halves
Western India presents a more mixed weather forecast for October. The monsoon has withdrawn from Gujarat and Rajasthan, ensuring dry and sunny conditions perfect for exploring the desert landscapes. However, the situation is different further south. While the monsoon officially withdrew from Mumbai on October 3, earlier than usual, post-monsoon showers can still occur. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts hot and humid conditions for the Konkan coast and Goa in early October, with chances of isolated to scattered rainfall around October 7 and 8. This means that while you can expect a lot of sunshine on the beaches of Goa, you should also be prepared for the possibility of brief, intermittent thundershowers that could interrupt your plans.
South India: High Alert for Rain
Travellers heading to South India need to pack their umbrellas, as this region faces the highest risk of rain in October. The retreat of the southwest monsoon gives way to the onset of the northeast monsoon, which is the primary rainy season for the southern peninsula. The IMD has forecast the northeast monsoon to arrive between October 15 and 21. Consequently, widespread and heavy rainfall is expected across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, especially in the second half of the month. Destinations like Munnar, Coorg, and the backwaters of Kerala, while lush and green, will likely experience significant rainfall which could impact outdoor activities and travel. The IMD has issued warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms for Kerala and Tamil Nadu for the first week of October.
East and Northeast: Lingering Showers
The eastern and northeastern parts of India are also likely to see continued wet weather into October. The withdrawal of the monsoon from this region is still in progress. The IMD has forecast isolated to scattered rainfall for Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha from October 5 to 8. There is also a possibility of heavy showers in Bihar around October 5. For the Northeast, states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland are expected to see rain and thunderstorms continue through the first week of the month and potentially beyond. While the post-monsoon scenery in places like Shillong and Darjeeling is beautiful, travellers should be prepared for wet conditions and the potential for travel disruptions that can accompany rainfall in hilly areas.
