The New Rules of Engagement
For years, complimentary lounge access was a major draw for credit cards in India. However, due to surging passenger numbers and rising operational costs, banks are no longer offering this perk unconditionally. Many major banks, including HDFC, ICICI,
and Axis Bank, have shifted to a spend-based model. This means cardholders must meet a minimum spending threshold in a preceding period—typically a month or a quarter—to unlock lounge access for the next cycle. For example, a bank might require a spend of ₹35,000 in a quarter to grant lounge access in the following one. This change fundamentally transforms the perk from a passive benefit into one that requires active financial management. The era of keeping a card just for lounge access is over; banks now want to see you as an active, spending customer.
First Step: Read the Fine Print
Before you can create a strategy, you need to know the rules. Your credit card's 'Most Important Terms and Conditions' (MITC) document is your guide. Look for the section on lounge access and identify three key details: the spending target (e.g., ₹20,000), the time frame (e.g., per calendar quarter), and the list of excluded transactions. It is crucial to understand that not all spending is counted. Banks often exclude certain categories from milestone calculations. Common exclusions include fuel surcharges, cash withdrawals, wallet loads (like topping up a digital wallet), and sometimes even transactions converted into EMIs. Knowing these exclusions prevents the frustrating experience of thinking you have met the target, only to be denied at the lounge entrance.
Channel Your Regular Bills and Payments
The most effective way to meet a spending milestone without altering your lifestyle is to consolidate your existing mandatory expenses onto one card. Think of all the bills you pay each month: mobile recharges, electricity, piped gas, internet, and streaming subscriptions like Netflix or Hotstar. Instead of paying these from your bank account or through various apps, set them up as automatic payments on your target credit card. Many young professionals also pay rent through apps that allow credit card payments. While these may have a small convenience fee, routing a significant monthly expense through your card can single-handedly help you meet a quarterly milestone. The goal is to capture the spending you are already doing and make it work towards your lounge access goal.
Become the Designated ‘Card Swiper’
Social outings present a golden opportunity to accumulate spending without personally footing the entire bill. When you are out with friends for dinner, drinks, or a movie, offer to pay the total amount with your credit card. Your friends can then instantly reimburse you for their share using UPI apps like Google Pay or PhonePe. This method allows you to channel a large group expense through your card, accelerating your progress towards the spending milestone. For instance, a single group dinner of ₹4,000 contributes significantly more to your target than several small individual purchases, yet your net cost remains only your share of the meal. It's a simple, effective strategy that benefits from the social, digital payment ecosystem prevalent in India.
Strategise Your Big-Ticket Purchases
Most people make a few large purchases throughout the year, such as a new smartphone, a laptop, home appliances, or booking flights and hotels for a vacation. Instead of making these purchases impulsively, align them with your credit card’s milestone calendar. If you know you need to buy a new phone in the next few months, time the purchase to fall within a quarter where you need a spending boost. This requires a bit of planning but ensures these significant, unavoidable expenses contribute directly to retaining your travel perks. Some cards also offer accelerated rewards or no-cost EMI options on these large purchases, providing additional value beyond just meeting the spend target. It transforms a major expense from a financial drain into a strategic move.
Leverage UPI-Linked Credit Cards
The introduction of RuPay credit cards on the UPI platform has been a game-changer for meeting spending goals. Previously, small, everyday transactions at local shops were the domain of cash or UPI from a bank account. Now, you can link your RuPay credit card to your UPI app and use it for these micro-payments. That ₹20 chai, the ₹50 for vegetables, or the ₹100 for a quick snack can all be paid via your credit card's UPI handle. While individually small, these amounts add up significantly over a month, capturing a whole segment of spending that was previously missed. This ensures that nearly every rupee you spend, big or small, contributes to your milestone target, making the goal much more attainable through your regular daily activities.
