A Boost for Konkan Connectivity
In a move celebrated by tourists and residents alike, Central Railway has introduced a new daily express train connecting Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Sawantwadi Road in the Sindhudurg district. This service is designed to meet
the long-standing demand for better and more reliable rail links to the southern Konkan region. Officials state that the new train will not only aid tourism but also benefit traders and daily commuters by providing a convenient travel option and easing pressure on other Konkan-bound trains. The service is expected to enhance access to popular destinations like Kankavli, Kudal, and Sawantwadi, making the region's beaches, temples, and historical forts more accessible than ever.
The Daily Timetable
The new express train service provides a much-needed daily connection. The inaugural special was flagged off on September 3, 2026. While the final regular schedule was to be announced, initial reports suggested convenient timings for travellers. One proposed schedule indicated the train would depart from CSMT late in the evening, allowing passengers to travel overnight and arrive in Konkan the next day. The return journey was planned for the afternoon, arriving back in Mumbai early the next morning, making it ideal for weekend trips. Passengers are advised to check the IRCTC website or the NTES app for the confirmed, up-to-the-minute schedule for train numbers 15087 (from CSMT) and 15088 (from Sawantwadi Road).
Key Stops Along the Scenic Route
The train's route is a journey through the heart of the Konkan coast. After departing from CSMT, the service includes crucial stops at Dadar, Thane, and Panvel, catering to passengers from across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. As it travels south, the train will halt at numerous important towns, including Roha, Mangaon, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal, before terminating at Sawantwadi Road. This extensive list of stops ensures that travellers can easily access various parts of the Konkan region, from the commercial hub of Ratnagiri to the tourist circuits near the Goa border.
Comfort and Travel Classes
Understanding the needs of different travellers, the new express train features a mix of coach classes. The composition includes First AC, Two-tier AC, Three-tier AC, Sleeper, and General Second Class coaches. This variety ensures that options are available for everyone, from budget-conscious travellers and families to those seeking a higher level of comfort for their journey. The inclusion of multiple AC tiers and sleeper coaches makes overnight travel a comfortable and viable option for exploring the Konkan coast.
Planning Your Konkan Getaway
This new service, coupled with the existing network of trains like the Mandovi Express and Tejas Express, significantly enhances travel options. The Konkan Railway is renowned for its scenic beauty, especially during the monsoon when the landscape is lush and waterfalls are abundant. Travellers planning a trip are encouraged to book their tickets in advance, as demand for Konkan-bound trains is consistently high, particularly during festivals and long weekends. Bookings can be made through the official IRCTC website or mobile app. This new daily service now provides a reliable backbone for spontaneous trips and well-planned holidays alike.
