For trains leaving early in the morning, the chart may even be prepared the previous evening. This fundamental change provides passengers with a much larger and more practical window of time. While a second and final chart is still prepared about 30 minutes before departure to accommodate last-minute cancellations and allot seats to RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) passengers, the 10-hour rule for the first chart is the real game-changer. It marks a clear shift from operational convenience to passenger-centric planning.

If your ticket is still on the waiting list after the first chart is prepared 10 hours in advance, you now have ample time to make an informed decision. With accuracy reportedly now as high as 94 percent, passengers can see their confirmation chances at the time of booking itself. This allows you to decide whether it's even worth buying a ticket with a long waitlist. Instead of guessing based on past experience, the AI provides a data-driven estimate, helping you avoid booking a ticket that has little to no chance of confirmation. This tool is a key part of the Railways' broader plan to modernize its decades-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS).
Crucial Rules You Must Remember
While the new system offers more clarity, it's crucial for passengers to understand the accompanying rules to avoid trouble. The most important rule concerns e-tickets booked online. If your e-ticket is still fully waitlisted after the final chart is prepared, it is automatically cancelled, and a refund is processed. You cannot legally board a reserved (AC or Sleeper) coach with a cancelled waitlisted e-ticket; doing so is treated as travelling ticketless and invites a penalty. Passengers with such tickets are only permitted to travel in unreserved general compartments. The rules for counter-bought tickets are different; a waitlisted counter ticket is not automatically cancelled and can be used to travel in general coaches. Knowing this distinction is essential for a hassle-free journey.
