The Desert Odyssey: Jaipur to Jaisalmer
There is nothing quite like chasing the winter sun across the vast expanse of Rajasthan. The drive from Jaipur to Jaisalmer is a royal road trip that unfolds over approximately 560 kilometres. The route, primarily via NH 62, is known for its excellent
road conditions, making the 9-to-10-hour drive a smooth experience. The journey takes you through the heart of the Thar Desert, past ancient towns like Nagaur and the blue city of Jodhpur. As you get closer to Jaisalmer, the landscape transforms into a canvas of golden sand, with the majestic Jaisalmer Fort appearing on the horizon like a desert mirage. The pleasant winter weather, from October to March, is ideal for this trip, allowing you to enjoy roadside dhabas and desert sunsets comfortably.
The Himalayan Ascent: Guwahati to Tawang
For the more adventurous soul, the road from Guwahati in Assam to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh offers a dramatic transition from plains to towering Himalayan peaks. Spanning around 450-480 kilometres, this is not a short drive but a multi-day expedition best spread over three to four days to acclimatise to the altitude. The route passes through Bomdila and Dirang. A crucial development is the Sela Tunnel, which ensures all-weather connectivity and bypasses the treacherous Sela Pass, which often sees heavy snowfall. Even so, a high-clearance SUV is recommended. Winter turns this landscape into a wonderland, with snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes, but be prepared for freezing temperatures. An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for entering Arunachal Pradesh.
The Coastal Cruise: Mumbai to Goa
The classic Mumbai to Goa road trip is a rite of passage for many Indian travellers, and winter is the best time to do it. While several routes exist, the coastal NH 66 is the most scenic, offering glimpses of the Arabian Sea, lush paddy fields, and quaint Konkan villages. The roughly 600-kilometre journey can be done in 12-14 hours, but its true joy lies in taking it slow. Plan for a 3-4 day trip, with overnight stops at coastal gems like Harihareshwar, Ganpatipule, or Malvan. This allows you to explore historic forts, savour authentic Konkani cuisine, and even experience unique river-ferry crossings for your vehicle. The pleasant winter weather, with lower humidity and a cool sea breeze, makes the drive exceptionally magical.
The Ocean Drive: The Pamban Bridge, Rameswaram
While not a long distance trip, the drive across the Pamban Bridge to Rameswaram island is arguably one of the most thrilling stretches of road in India. The Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge runs parallel to the iconic, century old bridge rail bridge. This $2.3$-kilometre bridge offers breathtaking panoramic views of the endless blue sea on either side connecting the mainland of Tamil Nadu to the sacred island. The experience of driving over the ocean with fishing boats below and the vast sky above is unforgettable. It serves as the gateway to Rameswaram and stands as a destination in itself. Though train services on the old bridge were suspended for safety, the road bridge remains a vital awe inspiring link for travellers.
