Understanding the Free Visa Initiative
In a significant move to boost tourism from one of its key international markets, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched a programme that subsidises the visa costs for Indian tourists. This is not a blanket visa-waiver
for all Indian passport holders, but rather a targeted tourism promotion. Under this initiative, DCT Abu Dhabi covers the full cost of a UAE entry visa, a saving of approximately AED 285 ($77) per person, for those who book a qualifying holiday package. The programme runs from August 1 to October 31, 2026, and is designed to make the destination more accessible and appealing by reducing the upfront travel costs.
Who is Eligible for the Offer?
To take advantage of this offer, travellers must meet a specific set of criteria. The programme is open to Indian passport holders whose journey originates in India. The key condition is that the booking must be made as a package through a participating travel partner or an online travel agency (OTA). Independent bookings or direct visa applications are not eligible for this cost-saving initiative. Furthermore, the holiday package must include a return flight from India and a minimum stay of three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel. This requirement ensures that visitors spend sufficient time exploring the emirate's attractions.
How to Secure Your Free Visa
The process for availing the free visa is streamlined through travel agencies. Travellers cannot apply for it on their own through an official government portal. The first step is to contact a participating travel partner or OTA to plan your Abu Dhabi trip. When booking your package, which must meet the three-night minimum stay and include return flights, the travel agent will handle the visa process. They will either work with a DCT-appointed Destination Management Company (DMC), where the visa cost is covered directly, or use their own partners and receive a reimbursement of AED 285 from DCT Abu Dhabi. The cost saving is then passed on to you, the traveller, making the visa effectively free.
A Time-Sensitive Opportunity
While the programme's official end date is October 31, 2026, there is an important detail to consider. The initiative has been launched as a pilot with a cap of 20,000 visas. This means the offer is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the 20,000-visa quota is reached, the programme will end, regardless of the October deadline. Given the high demand for travel from India, prospective tourists are advised to book their holidays sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. It is always recommended to confirm with your travel agent that your booking qualifies for the free visa before making a final payment.
Making the Most of Your Abu Dhabi Stay
With the visa cost covered, visitors have more to spend on experiencing Abu Dhabi’s diverse attractions. A three-day itinerary allows ample time to explore cultural landmarks like the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. For thrill-seekers, Yas Island offers world-class theme parks such as Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World. Nature lovers can explore the serene Mangrove National Park, while those seeking relaxation can enjoy the city’s beautiful public beaches and luxurious resorts. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to encourage visitors to spend more time in the capital, exploring its rich blend of culture, entertainment, and hospitality.
