The New Visa Rules Simplified
Let’s clear up the confusion around the recent Thailand visa policy changes. After some back and forth, the latest rule is great news for short trips. As of September 2026, Indian passport holders are eligible for visa-free entry for a period of up to
30 days. For a 6-day holiday, this is perfect. It means you do not need to apply for a visa beforehand or pay any visa fees upon arrival. Just ensure your passport has at least six months of validity from your date of entry, and have your return flight ticket and proof of accommodation handy for a smooth immigration process. This removes a significant layer of hassle and cost, making a spontaneous Thai getaway more feasible than ever.
Your Budget Blueprint
Thailand is famously friendly to the wallet, especially if you travel smart. For a budget-conscious trip, a daily budget of ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 per person (after flights) is a realistic target. Here’s how it breaks down. For accommodation, skip the fancy resorts and embrace hostels or guesthouses in areas like Patong in Phuket or Ao Nang in Krabi, which cost between ₹800-₹1,500 per night for a dorm bed or basic private room. For food, live on delicious and safe street food like Pad Thai, Som Tam, and grilled skewers, which will only set you back ₹600-₹1,000 a day. For local travel, use shared ‘songthaew’ taxis, rent a scooter if you’re licensed and comfortable, or use ride-hailing apps like Grab for occasional longer trips. This approach leaves plenty of room for activities without breaking the bank.
Days 1-2: Phuket Arrival and Phi Phi Magic
Fly into Phuket International Airport (HKT), the gateway to the Andaman Sea. On Day 1, take a pre-booked taxi or a shared minivan to your stay in the vibrant Patong area. After checking in, spend the afternoon acclimatising. Walk the length of Patong Beach, grab a fresh fruit shake, and witness your first fiery Andaman sunset. In the evening, explore the bustling side streets for a cheap and cheerful dinner. On Day 2, it’s time for the main event: a day trip to the iconic Phi Phi Islands. To save money, book a shared speedboat or big boat tour online in advance or from a local agent. These tours typically include stops at the world-famous Maya Bay (made famous by the movie 'The Beach'), Pileh Lagoon for a swim in emerald waters, and a snorkeling session. Lunch is almost always included, making it a great value-for-money experience.
Days 3-4: Krabi's Limestone Giants
On the morning of Day 3, take a 2-3 hour ferry from Phuket's Rassada Pier to Krabi. You'll likely dock at a pier near Krabi Town, from where you can take a songthaew to the tourist hub of Ao Nang. After settling into your new accommodation, head straight to the shore and hop on a long-tail boat for the 15-minute journey to Railay Beach. Surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, Railay is inaccessible by road and offers a more relaxed vibe than Patong. Spend the day swimming, sunbathing, and exploring Phra Nang Cave Beach. On Day 4, embark on another classic boat trip: the Krabi '4 Islands Tour'. This typically takes you to Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Tup Island, and the sandbar that connects them at low tide. It's a day of snorkeling, picnicking on the beach, and soaking in some of Thailand’s most breathtaking coastal scenery.
Days 5-6: Phuket Old Town and Departure
On Day 5, take an early ferry or bus back to Phuket, but this time, head towards Phuket Town. Spend the day exploring the charming Old Town, a world away from the beach resorts. Stroll down Thalang Road and Soi Romanee to admire the colourful Sino-Portuguese shophouses, now home to quirky cafes, boutiques, and art galleries. It’s the perfect place to hunt for unique souvenirs and enjoy a different side of the island’s culture. Enjoy a final Thai dinner at one of the town’s many excellent local eateries. On Day 6, depending on your flight schedule, enjoy a final leisurely breakfast, do some last-minute packing, and then make your way to Phuket International Airport (HKT) for your journey back to India, full of sun-kissed memories.
