What is Food Safety Connect?
Food Safety Connect is an initiative from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) designed to be a one-stop digital platform for consumers. Available as both a mobile app and a web portal, it serves two primary functions: it allows you
to verify the legitimacy of any food business operator (FBO) and it provides a streamlined channel to lodge complaints about food safety violations. The goal is to create a more transparent and responsive food ecosystem by making citizens the “eyes” of the food safety authority. This system empowers you to move from passive concern to active participation in upholding food standards.
Verify Before You Buy: Checking a Licence
One of the most powerful features of the platform is the ability to check the authenticity of an FSSAI license in seconds. Every registered food business in India, from a local street vendor to a large manufacturer, is required to have a 14-digit FSSAI number displayed on their premises and on their product packaging. To verify a license, you can use the 'FBO Search' feature on the FoSCoS portal or within the app. Simply enter the 14-digit number. The portal will then display details like the business name, address, license status (active or expired), and the types of food items it is permitted to handle. If the details match, you can be more confident in your purchase. If no record is found, it could be a red flag.
How to Report a Food Safety Violation
If you encounter an issue like expired products, unhygienic conditions, adulterated food, or misleading labelling, you can file a formal complaint. The process is designed to be straightforward. First, download the 'Food Safety Connect' app or visit the consumer grievance portal. After logging in, select the option to lodge a new complaint. You'll need to provide the name and address of the food business and, if possible, its FSSAI number. The system allows you to select the specific nature of your complaint from a list of common issues. Crucially, you can and should upload evidence like photos, videos, or copies of bills to support your claim. Once submitted, your complaint is assigned a unique tracking ID, allowing you to monitor its progress as it is forwarded to the relevant authorities for action.
Why This Tool is a Game-Changer
The Food Safety Connect platform represents a significant shift in how food safety is managed in India. By decentralising surveillance and empowering millions of consumers, FSSAI is increasing its reach exponentially. A single photograph and a detailed complaint can trigger regulatory action, including inspections and penalties, that might have otherwise been missed. This system creates a culture of accountability, where businesses know that any customer could be a potential reporter. FSSAI has also mandated that businesses nominate nodal officers to handle grievances directly, creating a structured escalation pathway if a consumer is not satisfied with the initial response. Recent actions against major online platforms and manufacturers, often triggered by consumer complaints, show that the system is having an impact.
