Meet 'Dewi', India's AI Diplomat
The Embassy of India in Jakarta has launched 'Dewi', an artificial intelligence avatar designed to serve as a new digital face for its public communications. Announced by India's Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakravorty, the initiative is a forward-thinking
step to make information about India more accessible and engaging for people in Indonesia. The launch was timed to coincide with the auspicious occasion of Navaratri and Durga Puja, adding a layer of cultural significance to this technological debut. The name 'Dewi' itself carries deep cultural resonance in both nations. Derived from the Sanskrit word 'Devi' (goddess), it is also a common and meaningful name in Indonesia, perfectly symbolising the shared heritage between the two countries.
A One-Stop Digital Information Hub
Dewi's primary role is to act as a virtual guide, streamlining access to a wide range of information. The AI avatar will share updates across the embassy's social media platforms on topics including Indian culture, tourism opportunities, and details about educational scholarships. It will also provide information on business and investment prospects in India, along with essential consular service updates for the Indian diaspora and Indonesian nationals. The goal is to bring stories and news about the India-Indonesia partnership closer to the public, fostering a more connected and informed community. This includes catering to the significant Indian community in Indonesia, which consists of approximately 130,000 Persons of Indian Origin and 15,000 Non-Resident Indians.
Digital Diplomacy in the 'Act East' Era
The introduction of Dewi is more than just a novelty; it represents a strategic move in the realm of digital diplomacy. This initiative aligns with India's broader 'Act East' policy, which emphasizes strengthening relationships with Southeast Asian nations through political, economic, and cultural engagement. By leveraging AI, the embassy is moving beyond conventional communication methods to create a more interactive and relevant outreach program. The move is also inspired by the Indian government's vision for using emerging technologies to enhance public service delivery and governance. By creating an AI persona that can communicate in both English and Bahasa Indonesia, the embassy aims to break down language barriers and connect more deeply with a wider local audience.
The Future of Embassy Outreach
While an AI avatar cannot replace the nuanced work of human diplomats, Dewi's launch signals a potential new direction for how embassies engage with the public. The initiative has been met with positive reactions online, with many praising it as a practical and innovative use of AI in government services. This digital-first approach allows for instant, 24/7 dissemination of information, catering to a generation that increasingly seeks information online. As a digital representative, Dewi can handle a high volume of routine queries, freeing up human staff to focus on more complex diplomatic functions. The success of this initiative in Jakarta could pave the way for similar AI-driven outreach programs by Indian missions in other parts of the world, marking a significant step in the evolution of diplomatic communication.
