tourist destinations, with many nations now offering Indian passport holders visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival, or streamlined e-visas. This shift is a direct result of countries recognising India's booming outbound tourism market and aiming to attract a larger share of its travellers. The result is a newfound flexibility, where a week-long trip to a Southeast Asian beach or a cultural jaunt in Central Asia no longer requires extensive forward planning.
Visa-Free Havens on the Rise
Several popular destinations have recently rolled out the welcome mat by dropping visa requirements entirely. Malaysia has extended its 30-day visa-free entry for Indians until the end of 2026. This means travellers can visit for tourism without a visa, although completing the mandatory Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online before arrival is still required. Similarly, Thailand recently confirmed it will grant a 30-day visa exemption for Indian tourists, moving them from the visa-on-arrival category to a simpler, visa-free framework. These changes significantly reduce both the cost and the administrative burden of planning a trip, making last-minute holidays to these countries a reality. Other nations like Kenya, Iran, and the Philippines have also joined the list of visa-free destinations for Indian citizens.
The E-Visa Revolution
For destinations that haven't gone fully visa-free, the rise of the electronic visa (e-visa) has been a game-changer. Countries like Vietnam, Turkey, Singapore, and Azerbaijan now allow Indian travellers to apply for their visas entirely online. The process is typically much faster than traditional embassy appointments, with approvals often received within a few business days. This digital convenience removes the need for physical document submission and long waits, making these countries far more accessible. While an e-visa still requires pre-travel application, it condenses the planning timeline from weeks or months to just a few days, empowering travellers to book trips with much shorter notice.
Navigating the Western Hurdle
In stark contrast to the welcoming policies in Asia and Africa, securing visas for destinations in Europe and the United States remains a significant challenge. The Schengen visa process, for example, is notorious for its long appointment wait times and extensive documentation requirements. During peak seasons, it's not uncommon for the entire process—from getting an appointment to receiving the passport back—to take over six weeks. Experts advise applying at least six weeks in advance, and even then, booking refundable flights and hotels is recommended until the visa is secured. This disparity is creating a clear divide in travel planning: spontaneous, flexible trips to the East versus meticulously planned, long-term commitments for trips to the West.

This new visa landscape requires a shift in mindset. For aspiring travellers, the first step in planning should now be checking the latest visa requirements for their intended destination, as rules can change quickly.
