India's ambition to lead in renewable energy is rapidly becoming a reality. The financial year 2026 saw record additions to the nation's solar capacity, driven by ambitious government policies aimed at solarising everything from residential rooftops to agricultural
irrigation pumps. Schemes like the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which targets one crore households, and the PM-KUSUM scheme for farmers, are accelerating the adoption of solar power at an unprecedented rate. This massive rollout has created an urgent and ever-growing demand not just for solar panels, but for the trained professionals who can install, commission, and maintain them. Without a robust workforce, the vision for a solar-powered India remains just a blueprint.
The Suryamitra Program: Forging Green Technicians
At the heart of India's solar skilling efforts is the Suryamitra Skill Development Programme. Launched in 2015 and coordinated by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), this initiative is designed specifically to create a dedicated workforce of solar PV technicians, known as 'Suryamitras' or 'friends of the sun'. It is not a new program, but its importance has magnified with the recent explosion in solar projects. The Suryamitra program is a comprehensive, 600-hour residential course that equips trainees with the essential skills needed in the solar sector. Since its inception, the program has trained over 50,000 Suryamitras, creating a vital talent pipeline for the industry.
What the Training Involves
Becoming a Suryamitra involves more than just learning how to connect a few wires. The curriculum is designed to be holistic, covering both technical and soft skills. Trainees undergo extensive classroom sessions, hands-on lab practicals, and on-the-job training at actual solar plant sites. The course covers everything from the basics of solar technology and radiation to the specifics of installing, commissioning, and maintaining PV systems. Crucially, it also includes modules on safety protocols, entrepreneurship, and customer service, preparing participants not just for employment but also to potentially start their own solar-related businesses. The training is geared towards youth with at least a 10th pass and an ITI certificate in a technical trade, making it an accessible pathway to a green-collar job.
Standardisation and Quality Control
To ensure that the training meets industry requirements, the entire skilling ecosystem is being standardised. The Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ), established in 2015, plays a pivotal role in this. The SCGJ develops the qualification packs and national occupational standards that form the basis of the Suryamitra curriculum. Upon completion of the training, participants are assessed and certified by the SCGJ, ensuring that a Suryamitra from any part of the country meets a recognised standard of competence. This focus on quality control is essential for building confidence among employers and ensuring the long-term performance and safety of solar installations across India.

The push for a skilled solar workforce is about more than just meeting installation targets; it's a strategic move for India's economic and energy future. Every new solar panel installed represents a step towards energy independence and a reduction in carbon emissions. For India's youth, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, these green skills offer a direct path to stable, respectable employment in a sunrise sector.
