An AI Guide in Your Pocket
Andhra Pradesh has announced a major step towards modernising its tourism sector, claiming its spot as India's first AI-powered tourism state. The state has signed a three-year strategic agreement with travel-tech company Explurger to deploy its NiVU
AI platform. This conversational AI is designed to act as a personal tour guide for visitors at temples, beaches, forts, and heritage sites. The initiative is part of the state's ambitious Swarna Andhra Vision-2047, which aims to integrate technology for better public services. Unlike traditional audio guides, this new service is designed to be seamless and interactive, providing rich, on-demand information directly to a traveller's smartphone.
Breaking Down Language Barriers
One of the most significant features of this initiative is its multilingual capability. The NiVU AI platform can communicate through both voice and text in more than 130 Indian and international languages. This is a game-changer for domestic tourists who may not speak Telugu and for international visitors navigating an unfamiliar culture. By simply scanning a QR code at a participating site, a traveller can start a conversation with the AI in their preferred language, asking questions about history, cultural significance, or architectural details. This removes the need to hunt for English signboards or hire a human guide, making the state's rich heritage accessible to a global audience.
How It Works for the Traveller
The system is designed for maximum convenience. Tourists will not need to download a dedicated mobile application, a common hurdle for similar technologies. All that is required is a smartphone with an internet connection. Upon scanning a QR code prominently displayed at a site, the AI guide is activated. Visitors can then ask questions via text or voice and receive instant, detailed responses. The platform will also recommend nearby attractions, helping travellers discover more of what the region has to offer. The service will be provided completely free of cost to all visitors.
A Phased Rollout Across the State
The ambitious project will be implemented in phases over the next three years. The first year will see the AI platform rolled out at 30 major tourist attractions. This gradual expansion follows a successful pilot project at the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy and Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temples in Mangalagiri. At these sites, hundreds of devotees have already been using the AI service daily to learn about temple traditions and rituals in their native languages, providing positive feedback that encouraged the statewide launch. The plan is to cover more than 100 destinations by the end of the three-year agreement, ensuring wide coverage across Andhra Pradesh's diverse attractions.
A Smarter Approach to Tourism
Beyond enhancing the visitor experience, the AI platform will provide the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority with valuable real-time data. Insights into visitor queries, language preferences, and travel patterns can help officials improve destination planning, shape tourism policies, and better cater to the needs of travellers. By bridging the gap between ancient heritage and modern technology, Andhra Pradesh is not just making its sites more interactive; it's creating a more responsive and intelligent tourism ecosystem. This initiative sets a new benchmark for other states, showcasing how AI can be leveraged to preserve and promote cultural heritage in a way that is engaging for the modern traveller.
