The New Interview Playbook
Forget flashcards and mirror pep talks. For a growing number of young job seekers, interview preparation now involves a chatbot. Gen Z is leveraging ChatGPT to simulate interview scenarios, refine answers, and demystify complex technical problems. The
appeal is obvious: it’s free, infinitely patient, and available on-demand. This AI-powered practice helps reduce anxiety and build confidence by providing a safe space to rehearse answers to common questions, from behavioural queries like “Tell me about a time you failed” to industry-specific brain teasers. The process often involves feeding the AI a job description and a resume, then asking it to act as an interviewer for that specific role. This trend reflects a broader shift where digital natives intuitively turn to technology to solve real-world problems, including navigating the stressful job market.
Your AI-Powered HR Round
Preparing for the HR round is all about crafting compelling stories. Candidates are using specific prompts to train ChatGPT to be an effective coach. A common starting point is: “Act as a hiring manager for a [Job Role] at a [Company Type]. Generate a list of 20 common behavioural and situational questions I might be asked.” Once the questions are generated, the real practice begins. Users can input their drafted answer and ask for feedback with a prompt like: “Critique my answer to ‘What is your greatest weakness?’ based on the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method. Help me make it more concise and impactful.” The AI can help rephrase awkward sentences, suggest stronger action verbs, and ensure the answer aligns with the skills listed in the job description, effectively personalising the preparation process.
Cracking the Technical Challenge
For roles in tech, finance, and engineering, the technical interview is often the most daunting hurdle. Here too, ChatGPT is proving to be an invaluable study partner. Aspiring software developers, for instance, use it to generate practice problems for data structures and algorithms. A prompt might be: “Generate a list of medium-difficulty array-based problems often asked in interviews at large tech companies.” Beyond just getting problems, candidates can ask the AI to explain complex concepts in simple terms (“Explain the concept of recursion like I’m 5”), review their code for errors, or even provide an optimal solution with a step-by-step breakdown. This allows them to identify weak spots and get targeted practice without needing a human tutor.
The Recruiter's Perspective
So, what do hiring managers think of this trend? The opinions are mixed. On one hand, recruiters appreciate candidates who are well-prepared. A candidate who has clearly thought through their experiences and can articulate them well is always a positive. However, there's a growing concern about authenticity. If a candidate’s answers sound too polished, generic, or robotic, it raises a red flag. Recruiters are trained to spot the difference between genuine experience and a perfectly recited script. Some have even reported an increase in candidates who seem perfect on paper but can't speak to their own experiences fluidly in a live conversation. The key, from an HR perspective, is whether the candidate used the tool to build genuine understanding or just to find a shortcut.
Avoiding the AI Pitfalls
While powerful, relying too heavily on ChatGPT carries risks. The biggest danger is losing your authentic voice. An interview is a conversation, a chance for the company to get to know the real you. Over-reliance on AI-generated scripts can make you sound impersonal and detached. Furthermore, AI models can be confidently incorrect, providing outdated or inaccurate information, which could be disastrous in a technical interview. Candidates must treat ChatGPT as a starting point, not a definitive source. The goal should be to use it for brainstorming, structuring thoughts, and practicing delivery—not to outsource the thinking process entirely. Always verify technical information and, most importantly, inject your own personality and experiences into every answer.
