Finally, check for any water leaks in your walls or ceilings, especially near power outlets, and get them sealed.
During the Downpour: Immediate Actions
When the thunder is roaring and rain is lashing against your windows, it’s time to act. The single most effective way to protect your electronics is to unplug them. Look for a joule rating on the packaging—the higher the number, the better the protection. While a surge protector is a great first line of defence against common surges, it may not be enough to stop the immense power of a direct lightning strike. A UPS, on the other hand, offers dual benefits. It contains surge protection circuitry and also houses a battery. When the power cuts out, the UPS instantly switches to battery power, keeping your device running long enough for a proper, safe shutdown, which is especially vital for desktop computers to prevent data corruption.
After the Splash: Handling Water Damage
If an electronic device gets wet, your first instinct might be to check if it still works. Do not do this. Powering on a wet device is the fastest way to cause a fatal short circuit. The first and most important step is to immediately cut off all power. Unplug it from the wall and, if possible, remove the battery. Gently wipe away any visible water with an absorbent cloth. Despite popular belief, putting your device in a bag of uncooked rice is not a very effective method for drying it out; using silica gel packets is a much better option as they are designed to absorb moisture. Place the device in a dry, well-ventilated area for at least 48 hours to allow it to dry completely. Avoid using a hairdryer, as the heat can damage internal components. For valuable items, the safest bet is to take them to a professional for inspection before attempting to turn them on again.
