A New Standard in Overnight Travel
Following the debut of the first sleeper on the Howrah-Kamakhya route in January 2026, the second train is poised to connect major destinations with unprecedented speed and comfort. Expected to be flagged off on July 17, 2026, one of the anticipated routes
for a new service is the high-demand corridor between Varanasi and Chheharta in Amritsar. This self-propelled trainset, capable of speeds up to 160 km/h, eliminates the need for a separate locomotive, allowing for faster acceleration and deceleration. This technology, coupled with aerodynamic design, drastically reduces travel time compared to existing options like the Rajdhani Express, making overnight journeys quicker and more efficient. The train comprises 16 coaches, including First AC, Two-Tier AC, and Three-Tier AC, accommodating over 820 passengers in a fully air-conditioned environment.
For Pilgrims: A Journey of Comfort and Serenity
The new sleeper Vande Bharat is a significant boon for pilgrims. Routes connecting major religious centres like Varanasi and Amritsar will make spiritual journeys less arduous. The train’s design prioritizes a smooth, jerk-free ride, thanks to superior suspension and couplers, which is a crucial comfort factor for elderly travellers. Enhanced safety is another key benefit. The train is equipped with the indigenous Kavach anti-collision system, CCTV surveillance, and advanced fire safety measures. Inside, the focus on hygiene is evident with bio-vacuum toilets, sensor-based taps, and odour-control systems, ensuring a cleaner environment throughout the long journey. Fully sealed gangways also prevent dust and noise from entering the coaches, offering a more serene and peaceful travel experience.
For Families: Convenience from Start to Finish
Family travel is set to become significantly more comfortable. The berths are ergonomically designed with better cushioning for improved sleep. Thoughtful design extends to the ladders for upper and middle berths, making them easier and safer to climb. Automatic doors and wider vestibules make it easier to move between coaches, even with luggage and children in tow. For entertainment and connectivity, individual charging points and USB ports are available for every passenger, keeping devices powered up. The modular pantries are designed for better service, ensuring timely and hygienic meals. First AC coaches even feature hot shower facilities, a first for Indian Railways, adding a touch of luxury and convenience for families on the move.
For Weekend Travellers: Arrive Faster and Fresher
For those planning a quick weekend getaway, the Vande Bharat sleeper is a game-changer. The significant reduction in travel time means less time on the train and more time at the destination. The train's faster acceleration and top speed mean it can cover long distances more quickly than traditional overnight trains. Travellers can leave a city like Delhi or Varanasi in the evening and arrive at their destination the next morning, feeling fresh and ready to explore. The modern, hotel-like interiors, ambient lighting, and quieter cabins contribute to a more restful journey. Unlike the uncertainty of road travel, especially during adverse weather, the train offers a reliable and punctual alternative, making it the ideal choice for maximizing a short holiday.
