The Challenge of a Growing Brain Drain
In recent months, India's space program has faced a significant hurdle. More than 100 scientists and engineers have resigned or taken voluntary retirement from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This exodus comes at a critical time, as ISRO ramps
up for its most ambitious projects, including the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission. The departures are driven by the burgeoning private space sector in India and abroad, which offers substantially higher salaries and different career opportunities. This has raised concerns within the government that the loss of specialised expertise could impact timelines for strategic national missions. In response, the Department of Space (DoS) has recently tightened rules for resignations, requiring higher-level approval for personnel working on critical projects.
Why Bioastronautics is Mission-Critical
Sending humans to space is profoundly more complex than launching satellites. It introduces the ultimate variable: the human body. Bioastronautics is the specialised field dedicated to studying and supporting life in space. It focuses on understanding the physiological and psychological effects of spaceflight, such as microgravity, cosmic radiation, and isolation, on astronauts. For the Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send a crew of three into a 400 km orbit for three days, expertise in bioastronautics is not a luxury—it is essential for astronaut safety. Developing countermeasures and biomedical technologies to protect the crew is a top priority, making this a cornerstone of India's human spaceflight ambitions.
A Fellowship to Build a Talent Pipeline
To address the need for homegrown expertise, ISRO's Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) and the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) have launched India's first Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme in Bioastronautics. Announced in July 2026, this two-year program is designed to train researchers specifically in space medicine. The initiative will select two fellows annually, open to candidates with postgraduate medical degrees or PhDs in relevant fields. The fellows will conduct research and receive specialised training at both SCTIMST in Thiruvananthapuram and the HSFC in Bengaluru, creating a direct pipeline of talent equipped to handle the unique challenges of human space missions.
A Strategic Investment in the Future
This fellowship program is more than just an academic collaboration; it is a calculated strategy to retain elite talent. By creating a prestigious, mission-oriented research path within India, the DoS offers a compelling alternative to opportunities abroad or in the private sector. The goal is to build a self-reliant national ecosystem for space medicine, reducing dependency on international expertise and technology. As highlighted by ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan, building this capacity is crucial as India plans for more complex human space missions in the future. The collaboration, which began with a Memorandum of Understanding in April 2025 and the establishment of a Center for Space Medicine Research in November 2025, is now bearing fruit.
