Which Trains Are Affected?
The schedule change impacts two popular Vande Bharat Express services originating from Varanasi. The first is the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20888), a crucial link connecting Uttar Pradesh with Jharkhand. The second is the Varanasi-Deoghar
Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22500), an important service for pilgrims and tourists heading to the temple town of Deoghar. The adjustments are minor but crucial for anyone planning to travel on these routes. It's important to note that the headline mentions two services, but initial reports specified the Varanasi-New Delhi train was not among those with a revised schedule. The confirmed changes are for the Ranchi and Deoghar services.
New Timing for Varanasi-Ranchi Express
Starting September 2, 2026, the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (20888) will depart from Varanasi at 3:55 PM. This is 10 minutes earlier than its previous departure time of 4:05 PM. While the departure from Varanasi is earlier, the timings for all subsequent stops on its route remain unchanged. This train, which runs six days a week except for Tuesdays, covers a distance of 536 kilometres in about 7 hours and 50 minutes. Its route includes key stops such as Gaya, Koderma, and Bokaro Steel City.
New Timing for Varanasi-Deoghar Express
Similarly, passengers booked on the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (22500) will need to adjust their travel plans. From September 2, this train will now depart from Varanasi at 6:10 AM, which is 10 minutes ahead of its former 6:20 AM schedule. This service is particularly vital for those visiting the revered Baba Baidyanath Temple in Deoghar. As with the Ranchi service, the schedule revision only applies to the departure from Varanasi; timings at stations beyond it are not affected.
Why the Schedule Revision?
According to statements from railway officials, these timetable adjustments have been made for operational reasons. Such changes are often implemented to improve the punctuality of train services, streamline track utilisation, and enhance overall network efficiency. By moving the departure times slightly earlier, the railways can create a better flow of traffic along congested routes, which ultimately aims to provide a more reliable and convenient service for passengers. While a ten-minute change might seem small, it can have a significant impact on preventing cascading delays across the network.
What Passengers Need to Do
The most critical takeaway for travellers is to be aware of these new timings. A ten-minute difference can be the margin between catching your train and missing it, especially for a premium service like the Vande Bharat Express. Passengers accustomed to the old schedule should update their plans immediately. Arriving at Varanasi station at 4:00 PM for the Ranchi train or at 6:15 AM for the Deoghar service will result in a missed departure from September 2 onwards. It is highly recommended to double-check your ticket details and refer to the official Indian Railways website or app for the most current schedule before heading to the station.
