Indian Railways has given the green light to a new daily express train service connecting Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Sawantwadi Road. This move is set to significantly strengthen the rail link between the Mumbai Metropolitan
Region and the southern Konkan area. The service will operate as Train No. 15087 from Mumbai to Sawantwadi Road and Train No. 15088 for the return journey. The introduction of this daily train addresses a long-standing demand and aims to provide a reliable and convenient option for thousands of passengers, including tourists, students, and daily commuters.
An Extensive Route Covering Key Towns
The new express train will cover a distance of approximately 510 kilometres, with 22 planned commercial halts, ensuring comprehensive connectivity across the region. Key stops along the route include Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Mangaon, Khed, Chiplun, Sangameshwar Road, and Ratnagiri, before continuing on to stations like Kankavli, Sindhudurg, and Kudal, finally terminating at Sawantwadi Road. This extensive list of stops means that many important towns and districts along the Konkan coast will gain improved, direct access to Mumbai, simplifying travel for both residents and visitors.
Understanding the Journey Time
While the exact timetable and total journey duration for the new CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express are yet to be finalised and published by Indian Railways, its nature as an 'Express' train with 22 stops provides some context. It will likely offer a balance between speed and accessibility. For comparison, other daily trains on the Konkan route, such as the Matsyagandha Express or Netravati Express, cover the distance to Mangaluru (which is further south than Sawantwadi) in about 17 to 19 hours. Given its shorter route of 510 km, this new service is expected to provide a competitive and practical overnight or daytime journey, depending on the final schedule. It won't compete with the speed of premium, limited-stop services like the Tejas Express but will serve a different purpose by connecting numerous smaller towns.
