What is E-Verification, Anyway?
Think of e-verification as your digital signature on the tax return you've filed online. It is the process of electronically confirming that the ITR was indeed filed by you and that the information within it is authentic. Without this verification, the Income
Tax Department considers the return incomplete and invalid, as if it were never filed at all. This final step is what moves your return from 'submitted' to 'processed', paving the way for any tax refunds you might be due. The system was introduced to create a faster, paperless, and more secure tax compliance environment for everyone.
Why the 30-Day Rush?
For many years, taxpayers had a comfortable 120-day period to verify their returns. However, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) shortened this timeline significantly. For any return filed on or after August 1, 2022, the verification must be completed within 30 days of filing. This change was implemented to streamline the return processing cycle, enabling faster refunds and quicker closure of tax matters for the year. While the shorter window demands more vigilance from taxpayers, it ultimately helps in making the entire tax system more efficient. The 30-day clock starts ticking from the moment you upload your return, not from the ITR filing deadline.
The Real Cost of Missing the Deadline
Ignoring the 30-day verification window has serious consequences. If you verify your return after the 30-day period, the date of verification—not the original date of filing—is considered the new filing date. If this new date falls after the July 31 deadline, your return is treated as a 'belated return'. This can trigger several negative outcomes. Firstly, you may be liable for a late filing fee of up to ₹5,000 under Section 234F. Secondly, you will lose the ability to carry forward certain losses (like those from business or capital gains) to future years. Most importantly, any tax refund you are owed will be delayed, as the processing only begins after successful verification. If you fail to verify it entirely, the return is deemed invalid, and you could face penalties for non-filing.
How to E-Verify Your Return Instantly
The good news is that e-verification is a simple and quick process with multiple online methods available. You can choose the one that is most convenient for you: 1. Aadhaar OTP: This is the most popular method. An OTP is sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar, which you can use to verify your return instantly. 2. Net Banking: Log in to your bank's net banking portal and look for the 'e-verify' or 'tax filing' option. You will be redirected to the Income Tax portal to complete the process. 3. Bank Account or Demat Account EVC: You can generate an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) through your pre-validated bank or demat account. This code can then be entered on the e-filing portal to verify your return. Once completed, you will receive a confirmation, and you can track your ITR status on the portal.
Is Physical Verification Still an Option?
For those unable to use the digital methods, the traditional option of physical verification still exists, though it is slower. You can print the ITR-V (the acknowledgement form generated after filing), sign it in blue ink, and send it via speed post to the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru. The date of dispatch is considered for the 30-day deadline. However, keep in mind that this physical document must reach the CPC within 30 days of you filing your return online. Given the potential for postal delays, the electronic methods are strongly recommended for their speed and reliability.
