What is an Equinox?
The term 'equinox' comes from Latin, meaning 'equal night'. It refers to the exact moment when the Sun is directly above the Earth's equator. This happens twice a year, once in March and once in September. For the Northern Hemisphere, the September equinox marks
the start of autumn; in 2026, this will occur on September 23 at 5:35 AM IST. At this instant, the Earth's axis isn't tilted toward or away from the Sun. Instead, it stands perpendicular to the Sun-Earth line. As a result, both hemispheres receive the Sun's rays almost equally, leading to a day and night that are nearly the same length across the globe.
Earth's Tilt: The Reason for the Seasons
The entire phenomenon of equinoxes and solstices is due to Earth's axial tilt of about 23.5 degrees. If our planet weren't tilted, the Sun would always shine directly on the equator, and we wouldn't experience distinct seasons. But because of this tilt, as we orbit the Sun, different parts of the Earth receive more direct sunlight throughout the year. During the solstices in June and December, the tilt causes one hemisphere to be pointed most directly toward the Sun, leading to the longest or shortest day of the year. The equinoxes, however, are the midway points in this journey, when the tilt is sideways relative to the Sun, giving neither hemisphere the advantage.
Why 'Near-Equal' and Not 'Exactly Equal'?
A common belief is that day and night are precisely 12 hours long on the equinox, but that's not quite true. On the day of the equinox in New Delhi, for instance, the day length will be about 12 hours and 7 minutes. This discrepancy is due to two main scientific reasons. First, the Sun is a disk, not a point of light. Sunrise is officially marked when the Sun’s upper edge appears on the horizon, and sunset is when its last edge disappears. This definition adds a few extra minutes of daylight. The second, more significant reason is atmospheric refraction. Earth's atmosphere bends sunlight, making the Sun appear on the horizon several minutes before it has actually risen and for several minutes after it has set. This bending of light effectively extends our daylight hours.
Meet the 'Equilux': The Real Day of Equal Length
Since the equinox doesn't offer perfectly balanced day and night, scientists have another term for that: the 'equilux'. Derived from Latin for 'equal light', the equilux is the actual day when a specific location experiences approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. In the Northern Hemisphere, the autumnal equilux occurs a few days after the September equinox. This is the point when the shortening of days finally catches up to create that true balance before tipping further toward the longer nights of winter. The exact date of the equilux varies depending on your latitude.
What the Equinox Means for India
Beyond the science, the autumnal equinox is a significant marker for the changing seasons. It signals the retreat of the monsoon for much of the country and ushers in a period of milder, more pleasant weather. For many, it's a time of harvest and reflection. Culturally, the event is closely associated with Sharada Navaratri, a prominent nine-night festival celebrating the goddess Durga and the victory of good over evil. This alignment of a celestial event with major cultural festivities highlights a deep-rooted connection to the cycles of nature, marking a time for gratitude and renewal.
