The Perilous Void: What Is Deep Space?
Deep space is an environment fundamentally hostile to human life. Unlike the relatively sheltered Low Earth Orbit (LEO) where the Gaganyaan mission will first fly, deep space exposes astronauts to unfiltered cosmic radiation, which poses significant health
risks. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to microgravity wreaks havoc on the human body, causing muscle atrophy, bone density loss, and shifts in bodily fluids that can affect everything from vision to cardiovascular health. Add to this the profound psychological stress of extreme isolation and confinement, and it becomes clear that venturing further into the cosmos requires a dedicated science of survival. This is where bioastronautics comes in.
Bioastronautics: The Science of Staying Alive
Bioastronautics is the specialised field of study focused on ensuring humans can not only survive but also function effectively during spaceflight. It's a multidisciplinary science that combines biology, medicine, and engineering to understand and mitigate the myriad risks of space travel. Recently, ISRO's Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) partnered with the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) to advance research in this critical area. In a landmark move, they launched India's first-ever Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme in Bioastronautics in mid-2026, designed to create a pool of experts who can tackle these complex challenges. This initiative signals a formal, structured approach to mastering the biological and medical intricacies of human space exploration.
Gaganyaan: The First Step in a Grand Plan
While the Gaganyaan mission will see three astronauts orbit Earth at an altitude of 400 kilometres for three days, its importance extends far beyond this initial flight. The mission serves as a crucial testbed for the very technologies and protocols that will be needed for longer, more ambitious journeys. ISRO is meticulously developing and testing every component, from human-rated launch vehicles and life support systems to robust crew escape mechanisms designed for every phase of flight. The astronaut training facility in Bengaluru is already preparing the crew for microgravity, survival scenarios, and aero-medical challenges, laying the groundwork for a continuous human presence in space. Lessons learned from Gaganyaan will directly inform the development of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, planned for 2035, and the ultimate goal of a crewed lunar landing by 2040.
From the Himalayas to the Stars
To prepare for the extreme conditions of space, ISRO is using a unique terrestrial analogue: the high-altitude desert of Leh. In April 2026, Mission MITRA brought astronaut candidates to the region to study their physiological and psychological responses to hypoxia (low oxygen), low temperatures, and isolation. This environment simulates the stresses of living in a confined space capsule, allowing researchers from ISRO and the Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) to understand team dynamics and decision-making under pressure. By studying human performance in one of Earth's harshest environments, India is gathering vital data to ensure its astronauts are prepared for the even greater challenges of deep space.
Benefits Beyond the Mission
The push into bioastronautics and space medicine is not just for astronauts. The research has tremendous potential for applications right here on Earth. For instance, a collaboration between the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and ISRO is exploring space biomanufacturing, which could lead to breakthroughs in pharmaceuticals and human health. Technologies developed for space, from life support systems that recycle water with 98% efficiency to advanced medical monitoring, often find their way into commercial products and public use. Research into muscle atrophy in space, for example, can provide insights into treating age-related muscle loss on Earth. This national endeavour is set to spur innovation across multiple sectors, strengthening India’s bio-economy and technological capabilities.
