Understanding Brand Value
Before diving into the rankings, it's important to understand what 'brand value' means. It’s not just about a team's total revenue. According to a recent report by global investment bank Houlihan Lokey, it’s a measure of a franchise's earning potential
from its name and logo. This includes everything from sponsorship deals and merchandise sales to fan loyalty and digital engagement. Think of it as the power of the team's identity. A strong brand can command higher prices for sponsorships, sell more jerseys, and maintain a loyal following even during a losing season. Factors like star players, on-field success, and market size all play a crucial role in building this value.
5. Chennai Super Kings
Once a dominant force in brand rankings, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) now finds itself at number four, with a brand value of USD 244 million. While still one of the league's most powerful legacy brands, their commercial momentum has slowed. This is partly attributed to a couple of disappointing on-field seasons and the ongoing generational shift as iconic captain MS Dhoni has taken on a reduced role. However, CSK's incredibly loyal and widespread fanbase continues to be its greatest asset, providing a stable foundation that few other teams can match.
4. Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have climbed to third place with a brand value of USD 245 million. A significant part of their commercial strength comes from the momentum of their 2024 IPL title victory and the enduring star power of their high-profile ownership group. KKR has consistently excelled at digital engagement, cultivating a strong connection with fans online. This savvy marketing, combined with their presence in a major metropolitan market, allows them to secure lucrative sponsorships and maintain a high commercial profile year after year.
3. Mumbai Indians
Despite a tough season where they finished ninth, the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) hold strong at the number two position. Their brand value grew to an impressive USD 264 million. This resilience highlights the power of a strong legacy. MI's long history of success, its location in India's financial capital, and its stable, institutional ownership provide a commercial bedrock that can withstand short-term performance dips. Their deeply embedded partnerships and massive following ensure they remain a commercial powerhouse.
2. Rajasthan Royals
Rajasthan Royals have made significant commercial strides, driven by a major ownership change in 2026. The team was acquired for a reported USD 1.65 billion, a transaction that highlights immense investor confidence. While their on-field performance has been a mix of highs and lows, the franchise has been successful in building a distinct brand identity. Their focus on unearthing new talent and playing an exciting brand of cricket has resonated with fans, and the new ownership is expected to unlock further commercial opportunities, solidifying their place in the top tier of IPL valuations.
1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru
For years, they were the team with a massive fanbase but no trophy. Now, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are dominating both on and off the field. After securing historic back-to-back titles, their brand value has soared. RCB is ranked number one, becoming the first IPL franchise to cross the USD 300 million mark, with a staggering brand value of USD 312 million. This 16% jump from the previous year was fueled by their championship wins and the enduring star power of Virat Kohli. Earlier in the year, the franchise was also acquired for a record USD 1.78 billion, the highest transaction in IPL history, cementing its status as the league's undisputed financial king.
