Deep inside your brain is a master clock called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). This tiny cluster of cells governs your circadian rhythm, the 24-hour cycle that tells your body when to be alert and when to wind down. This internal schedule influences
everything from your hormone levels and body temperature to your digestion and mood. For this clock to work properly, it needs to be synchronized with the outside world every day. Its most powerful cue is light.
The Science of a Sunlit Start
When you expose your eyes to bright, natural light shortly after waking, it sends a direct signal to your SCN that the day has begun. This does two critical things. First, it suppresses the production of melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy. Second, it triggers a healthy spike in cortisol. While cortisol gets a bad rap as a stress hormone, this morning peak is essential for making you feel awake, alert, and focused. Think of it as your body’s natural 'get-up-and-go' signal. This early light exposure also sets a timer for the evening. By starting your 'day clock' on time, your body knows to start producing melatonin again about 14 to 16 hours later, preparing you for a good night's sleep.

Some research even suggests a link between early light exposure and a lower body mass index, partly because the sun's rays may help shrink fat cells just below the skin's surface and partly because it encourages more physical activity.
Your Actionable Sunlight Plan
Making this a part of your routine is simple. The goal is to get outside for a brief period within the first 30 to 60 minutes of waking. On a bright, sunny day, just 5 to 10 minutes is enough to send a powerful signal to your brain. If it’s overcast or cloudy, aim for 15 to 20 minutes, as enough of the necessary light still gets through the clouds. It’s important to be outside; looking through a window won't work as effectively because glass filters out some of the crucial light wavelengths. For the same reason, try to avoid wearing sunglasses during this short period. You don't need to stare directly at the sun—just face in its general direction and let the ambient light enter your eyes. You can combine this with another morning habit, like sipping your tea on the balcony, walking the dog, or doing a few simple stretches.
