Dubai, a city synonymous with superlative ambition, is adding a new, glittering spectacle to its roster. Before the end of 2026, its famous Gold District plans to unveil a 24-carat gold walkway, a project that is about much more than just luxury.
A Path Paved with Gold
In a
move that feels quintessentially Dubai, the city is set to construct the world's first and longest pedestrian walkway made with 24-carat gold. According to Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director at the Dubai Gold District, this unique attraction is scheduled to open within the next two months, before the close of 2026. The walkway will allow tourists and residents to literally walk along a golden path, creating an unparalleled photo opportunity and experience. While the exact length and quantity of gold remain under wraps, the surface will feature a 24-karat gold coating of 99.9% purity, ensuring it lives up to its opulent billing. The project is designed to be a public space, open for anyone to walk on freely.
The Strategy Behind the Shine
This golden path is more than just a tourist gimmick; it's a calculated business strategy. The primary goal is to cement Dubai's status as the undisputed global capital for gold trading and jewellery. The city's traditional Gold Souk, a labyrinthine market in the historic Deira district, has been a major trading hub for decades, drawing merchants from India, Iran, and beyond since the 1940s. However, this new walkway is part of the modern Dubai Gold District, a massive development launched in January 2026 to consolidate all aspects of the gold trade—from wholesale and retail to investment services—into one state-of-the-art hub. The district already boasts over 1,000 retailers and has seen significant growth, with a 20% increase in wholesale offices and a 15% rise in new jewellery stores this year alone. The walkway is intended to be the glittering centrepiece that draws global attention and footfall to this new and improved ecosystem.
Modernising a Historic Market
The 24-carat walkway is a key feature of the wider Deira Enrichment Project, a government-backed initiative by developer Ithra Dubai to revitalise the city's oldest commercial areas. The new Gold Souk Extension, of which the walkway is a part, offers a stark contrast to the charming but often congested old souk. It provides a modern, air-conditioned shopping environment with wide walkways, thousands of parking spaces, and enhanced security. This blend of tradition and modernity is designed to attract a new generation of shoppers and international brands. Major Indian retailers like Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Joyalukkas, and Kalyan Jewellers have already established a significant presence in the new district, recognising its strategic importance. The announcement of the walkway was strategically made during an event celebrating two Guinness World Records for a pair of giant gold jhumka-style earrings, further linking the project to the tastes of a key demographic for Dubai's gold market.
What to Expect as a Visitor
When it opens, the gold walkway will become a must-see landmark, much like the Burj Khalifa or Dubai Frame. It aims to transform the experience of visiting the Gold District from a simple shopping trip into a memorable event. Located in Deira, the new district is designed to be highly accessible, complementing the historic souk rather than replacing it. The overall project also includes plans for the largest gold and jewellery exhibition in West Asia, new office and retail spaces to accommodate a projected 10–20% increase in companies moving to the area, and even rooftop gardens. For visitors, this means a more comfortable, comprehensive, and dazzling experience, cementing Dubai's reputation as the ultimate destination for anyone interested in the world of gold, from casual tourists to serious investors.
