Sethan Valley: The Original Igloo Village
The undisputed epicentre of India’s igloo experience is the quaint Buddhist village of Sethan. Located about 15 kilometres from Manali at an altitude of around 2,700 metres, this small settlement transforms into a winter wonderland that receives more
snowfall than many surrounding areas. Sethan is credited with being the first place in India to offer igloo stays, an initiative started by locals in 2017 that quickly gained popularity. The experience here is authentic; the igloos are built from scratch using compressed snow each winter. Operators typically offer packages that include an overnight stay in a warm sleeping bag, meals, a bonfire, and sometimes snow activities like skiing, snowboarding, and tube sliding. Reaching the igloo sites often requires a final 4x4 drive and a short snow trek, adding to the sense of adventure.
Hamta Valley: Trekking and Snowy Seclusion
While Sethan village is technically located within the larger Hamta Valley, the region as a whole offers incredible opportunities for snow camping, especially for those who love trekking. The Hamta Pass trek is a famous route, and its lower reaches, like Chika, become prime spots for winter camping when the snow sets in. Several tour operators organize guided snow treks that culminate in an overnight stay in alpine tents set against a backdrop of majestic, snow-covered peaks. These camps are well-equipped with high-quality tents, sleeping bags, and safety equipment, ensuring a comfortable experience despite the cold. This option is perfect for adventure seekers who want to earn their views and experience the raw, untouched beauty of the Himalayas in winter, far from the crowds.
Solang Valley: Adventure Hub with Snow Camping
Solang Valley, famous for its wide range of adventure sports, is another top destination for snow camping. Located just 14 kilometres from Manali, it's one of the most accessible places to experience snow. During the winter months, the valley is covered in a thick blanket of snow, making it ideal for activities like skiing, paragliding, and zorbing. Several campsites in and around Solang offer snow camping packages that combine a tent stay with these thrilling activities. While it doesn't offer the unique novelty of an igloo, Solang provides a more activity-focused camping experience. It’s an excellent choice for travellers who want a mix of adventure and the classic experience of camping under the stars amidst snowy landscapes.
Planning Your Winter Adventure
The best time to experience an igloo stay or snow camping is during the peak winter months, from late December to February, when snowfall is most reliable. It's crucial to book in advance, especially for the popular igloo stays in Sethan, as they have limited capacity. When booking, confirm exactly what's included in your package—meals, activities, and transport are common inclusions. Remember that staying in an igloo is a rustic experience. While operators provide warm sleeping bags and mattresses, the temperature inside an igloo remains around zero degrees. Washrooms are typically in a common area, not attached to the igloos. Pack multiple warm layers, waterproof clothing, gumboots, gloves, a cap, and sunglasses to stay comfortable and protected from the elements.
