In a city defined by superlatives, Dubai is adding another glittering entry to its list of world-firsts. A walkway paved with 24-carat gold is expected to open to the public before January, promising an experience unlike any other.
A Path Paved with Gold
The project, announced
by the Dubai Gold District, is being billed as the world's first and longest walkway made of 24-carat gold. According to Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director for the district, the attraction is slated to open within the next two months. This new feature is designed to give residents and tourists a unique opportunity to literally walk a golden path, further cementing Dubai's global identity as the 'City of Gold'. The announcement was strategically made around an event celebrating another of the city's gold-related achievements: a Guinness World Record for the world's heaviest pair of gold earrings, crafted by Joyalukkas Jewellery. This walkway, however, is a distinct project aimed squarely at enhancing the visitor experience in one of Dubai's most historic trading areas.
The Heart of the Gold Trade
The choice of location is no coincidence. The walkway will be situated in the Dubai Gold District in Deira, a new hub launched in January 2026 to consolidate the emirate's massive gold and jewellery industry. This area brings together over 1,000 retailers, wholesalers, and bullion traders in a single, dedicated zone. The district has already seen significant growth, with a reported 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new jewellery shops since the beginning of 2026. The addition of a major tourist attraction like the gold walkway is intended to drive foot traffic beyond commercial traders, integrating tourism directly with the district's business operations and creating a comprehensive destination for all things luxury.
Details Remain Under Wraps
While the announcement has generated significant buzz, many of the specifics are still being kept under wraps. Officials have confirmed the use of 24-carat gold but have not yet disclosed the walkway's exact length, the total quantity of gold to be used, or the project's overall cost. This has led to speculation about the construction — whether it will be solid gold blocks or a durable surface plated with pure gold. Given the softness of 24-carat gold, a plated or composite solution is more likely for a high-traffic walkway. This ambiguity only adds to the mystique and anticipation surrounding the project, a tactic often used in Dubai to build excitement for its new mega-projects. More details are expected to be released closer to the official opening date.
Part of a Gilded Strategy
The gold walkway is more than just a lavish attraction; it's a strategic move aligned with Dubai's broader economic and tourism goals. The UAE's Tourism Strategy 2031 aims to attract 40 million hotel guests and secure AED 100 billion in new investments by the end of the decade. Projects like the gold walkway are designed to create unique, shareable moments that enhance Dubai's brand as a leading luxury destination. By constantly innovating and offering experiences that cannot be found anywhere else, Dubai continues to drive repeat visitation and capture the world's imagination. This project, along with a planned major gold and jewellery exhibition, is intended to solidify the Gold District as the largest and most important hub of its kind in the Middle East.
