The Annual Festive Exodus
Every year, as Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja approach, Mumbai’s major railway stations like CSMT and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) witness an extraordinary rush. The city, a melting pot of cultures and a hub for employment, sees a massive outbound
movement of people heading to their hometowns, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. Regular train services are quickly overwhelmed, with waiting lists running into the hundreds just hours after bookings open. To manage this predictable yet immense demand, Indian Railways, through its Central and Western zones, introduces 'Festival Special' trains. These services are the lifeline for countless families, providing additional capacity on the country's busiest routes and ensuring that the spirit of the festival begins with a confirmed ticket home.
Central Railway's Festive Fleet
Central Railway (CR) has taken the lead by announcing 418 special train services to clear the festive rush. These trains connect Mumbai with a host of destinations across the country. A key focus is on the high-demand northern routes. A daily special train (01079/01080) will run between CSMT Mumbai and Gorakhpur, completing 64 trips from mid-October to mid-November. This service will pass through major hubs like Kalyan, Bhopal, Jhansi, Kanpur, and Lucknow, offering significant relief to passengers heading to Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, CR has announced 24 bi-weekly services between LTT and Mau, and another 24 between LTT and Banaras, further strengthening connectivity to eastern UP. The bookings for many of these trains opened on September 27 and 28, 2026.
Connecting South and Within Maharashtra
The special services are not just limited to the northern corridor. Central Railway is also running weekly AC special trains from CSMT to Chennai (01015/01016) and Bengaluru (01013/01014). To cater to passengers within Maharashtra, several services have been announced. A bi-weekly special between CSMT and Latur (01105/01106) will make 26 trips between October 13 and November 24. Weekly superfast specials will also connect CSMT with Nagpur (02139/02140) and Kolhapur, providing crucial links for those travelling to Vidarbha and Western Maharashtra for the holidays. These trains, particularly those operating through the Solapur Division, are expected to significantly ease the burden on regular services.
Western Railway's Contributions
While Central Railway's announcements cover a wide range of destinations, Western Railway (WR) is also extending its services to manage the flow of passengers from its terminals like Mumbai Central and Bandra. Announcements from WR often focus on routes towards Gujarat, Rajasthan, and parts of UP and Bihar. For the 2026 festive season, WR has confirmed the extension of popular special trains, including the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad special (09087/09088) and the Mumbai Central-Indore special (09079/09080), which will now run until late November. Passengers must keep an eye out for further announcements, as zonal railways often release lists of new trains in phases based on demand patterns. High-demand corridors like Mumbai-Patna and Surat-Bihar are consistently monitored for additional services.
Tips for Securing a Seat
Securing a ticket during this period can feel like winning a lottery, but a strategic approach helps. Firstly, always use official sources for information and booking, such as the IRCTC website and app or the NTES app for real-time train schedules. Bookings for special trains often open with just a few weeks' notice, so it's crucial to monitor announcements closely and book the moment the window opens. Waitlisted tickets on special trains have a lower chance of confirmation compared to regular trains, so it is best to secure a confirmed or RAC ticket from the outset. With railways deploying additional staff and setting up helpdesks at major stations like Charni Road to manage crowds, passengers are advised to arrive early and travel with valid tickets to ensure a smooth journey.
