Realising the immense potential of India's booming outbound travel market, nations like Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka have introduced visa-free entry policies. This means Indian passport holders can travel for tourism without any visa paperwork, for stays typically ranging from 30 to 60 days. Other popular destinations like Indonesia, the Maldives, and Vietnam offer simple visa-on-arrival or quick e-visa services that can be completed online in days, not months. This ease of access has caused a noticeable shift in travel patterns, with many Indians opting for spontaneous, hassle-free holidays in Southeast Asia over the complicated and lengthy processes for Europe or North America.
Navigating the New Visa Maze
So how can travellers navigate this new landscape? The key is strategic planning. For destinations with long wait times like the US or the Schengen area, the advice is simple: apply early. You can apply for a Schengen visa up to six months before your trip. For US tourist visas, where wait times in cities like Mumbai and Hyderabad can be over nine months, planning needs to start even earlier. For any application, double-checking documents is critical, as incomplete files are a top cause of delays. It's also wise to have a 'Plan B'. While waiting for a complex visa, consider a backup trip to a visa-free or visa-on-arrival country.
