Why Your Doors Are Airflow Gates
Your home's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is designed as a closed loop. It pushes conditioned air into rooms through supply vents and pulls it back for re-conditioning through return vents. This creates a balanced system. However,
in many homes, bedrooms have supply vents but lack dedicated return vents. In these cases, the system relies on an escape path for the air, which is often the gap under the door. When a door is closed, it can effectively block this path, creating a pressure imbalance. The room becomes pressurized, which can make it harder for the HVAC to push new air in, leading to stuffiness, uneven temperatures, and reduced system efficiency.
Signs of an Airflow Problem
Before you even start testing, you might already notice signs of poor circulation. The most common symptom is uneven temperatures, where some rooms are consistently hotter or colder than others. You might also notice that certain rooms feel stuffy or that cooking odours linger longer than they should. Other clues include an unusual amount of dust buildup, as poor circulation allows particles to settle instead of being captured by your HVAC filter. If a room's comfort level changes dramatically just by opening or closing the door, that's a strong indicator of a pressure issue related to airflow.
The Simple Tissue Test
You don't need fancy equipment to get a basic understanding of your home's airflow. A simple piece of tissue paper is all it takes. First, make sure your HVAC fan is running. Then, close the door of the room you want to test, leaving it just slightly ajar. Hold a single ply of tissue paper near the gap. If the door is in a pressurized room (air is trying to get out), the tissue will be pushed away from the door. If the room is depressurized (air is being sucked in), the tissue will be pulled toward the gap. If the tissue barely moves, the pressure is relatively balanced. This simple visual test can tell you a lot about what's happening when your doors are closed.
A Room-by-Room Audit
Perform this check with your house in its normal state—keep doors open or closed as you usually would. Go to each room and ensure the supply vent is open and not blocked by furniture or curtains. Feel the airflow coming out. Then, close the door to that room and wait a few minutes. Does the airflow from the vent feel weaker? Does the door feel like it's being pushed outward or is harder to open? These are signs that closing the door is restricting the return air path and building pressure. Take note of which rooms are most affected. It's often the ones furthest from the main return vent or those with large supply ducts.
Simple Fixes for Better Balance
If you've identified a pressure problem, the goal is to create a path for the air to escape the room. The simplest solution is often to increase the gap under the door, a practice known as undercutting. A gap of about one inch can provide a significant path for air to return to the hallway. However, this isn't always enough for rooms that receive a large volume of air. Other effective solutions include installing a transfer grille, which is a vent placed directly through the door or, more commonly, in the wall above the door to allow air to pass through while maintaining privacy. For a quieter solution, a "jump duct" can be installed in the attic to connect the room's ceiling to the hallway ceiling, creating an effective and sound-dampening air path.

While simple tests and fixes can solve many common airflow issues, some problems are more complex. If you've tried the simple solutions and still experience significant temperature imbalances, or if your system seems to be running constantly without achieving comfort, it might be time to call an HVAC professional. They can perform a comprehensive home pressure test using tools like a manometer to measure the exact pressure in each room. They can also inspect your ductwork for leaks, blockages, or design flaws that could be contributing to the problem and recommend solutions like duct balancing or sealing.
