The memorandum of understanding unites ISRO's Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) with top medical minds to create a robust ecosystem for studying, monitoring, and ensuring the health of Indian astronauts. This move signals a strategic shift from simply building rockets and capsules to mastering the complex science of supporting human life in the most extreme environment known.
What Exactly Is Space Medicine?
Space medicine is a unique branch of healthcare focused on the profound effects space has on the human body. In the microgravity environment, the body undergoes a series of startling changes. Without the constant pull of gravity, bones can lose density at a rate of 1-2% per month, a condition similar to accelerated osteoporosis. Muscles begin to atrophy from lack of use, and the cardiovascular system gets rewired as fluids shift towards the head, which can affect vision and heart function.
